A coupon for HL2 will be in the XT box...but so what.

Even before the 6 month delay of the release of HL2, ATI said the new 9800XT
and 9600XT would just include a coupon to get the game, not the actual game.
But do I want to buy a 9600XT in November if the game I want it for won't be
released until April 2004? What ATI/nVidia cards will be available then? The
9600XT will be dirt cheap by next April; it might even be an outdated card
by then.

This is getting really complicated. :)

April?? Really? I understand their
source code was made public, but I fail
to see why this means such a long delay.
I would have thought they would be
encouraged to release sooner rather
than later.

Exactly!! The hype over these games is making a video card purchase pretty
tough. April is a long ways away.

The Inq reports that the delay reported by various places including
themselves is now thought to be false, and that HL2 will still be released
for Christmas.

won't

That'd be nice Andy but CNN are reporting differently....

"A third of the source code was stolen," VU Games president of international
operations Christophe Ramboz told daily Les Echos in its Tuesday edition.
"It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at
least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of
the game."

I'd prefer you to be right but........... Shawk

It looks like Valve were very confident of the September 30th release
date originally, but software development being what it is, it slipped
anyway.
I would imagine they need to change some odds and sods to stop people
pre-emptively coding up online cheating software. But blaming the leak
on a 4 month delay sounds like typical media monkey talk.

My money's on December.

I think they would be foolish to take longer than December. Certainly, a
lot of people would lose interest in the game, altogether, if they took that
long. If they really take that long to release, they will be shooting
themselves in the foot.

uhhh they won't be waiting until april trust me. there is a beta of half
life 2 floating around at 1.4 gb, and if they wait that long, everyone will
have the game before they even release it... i think they are going to get
it out as quickly as possible

Dunno about that, I doubt that the downloadable trailers reached many
outside the enthusiast community, and I haven't seen much mass market
advertising of the game yet - a couple of previews in games magazines so
far.

Why would they delay a game by four months because the code was 'stolen'.
It's not as though it's stolen and they don't have it any more and must
rewrite it! As STE noted, the most they have to do is make a few changes so
that cheats won't work with the released version. Another article stated
the developers wanted 'newness' and would therefore rewrite the stolen code.
But this doesn't mean anything - even if the thieves managed to compile and
release an unauthorised alpha version, so what - Doom 3 is available in
Alpha and if anything only makes me want the full game even more.
