A Couple Of Problems...HELP!

Installed:
Windows XP Home w/SP 2 (Retail) and Automatic Updates
160GB HD
AMD Athlon64 3000+
512DDR RAM, etc.

I need some serious help right away. Last night, while I was browsing
sites, I got the little error that pops up in the taskbar that says
something's corrupt or missing (or something along those lines), and says to
run the chkdsk utility. So, I do that in the only way I know how---I opened
the command prompt ("cmd" under "Run" ), typed "chkdsk /f" (because I know
that runs chkdsk when you restart you computer). So I do this, restart my
computer, and after all the drive & memory scanning is done (right when you
start your computer), right before the chkdsk screen appears, I get a black
screen with this messege:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\System32\Config\System"

And after those lines, it says something like repairing the problem by
starting the computer with the Windows disc and pressing "R" when it says.
Now, I know how to do this, so I do it, got through commands and figure I
don't know what the hell I'm doing, I'm too tired right now, and I turn it
off and go to sleep. I wake up, go through this again, and figure to just
reformat and install my other hard drive, and then install Windows onto that,
and try to fix the problem by some other means. Those main means being
performing said installation of HD and Windows, and then copying all my
important files from my 160GB to my 40GB (no biggie, not too much important
stuff in there---but what is important is VERY important to me), reformatting
the 160GB HD, and just keeping the Windows installation on the 40GB (and
moving all my files back to the 160GB, and burning them onto CD or DVD
later). So I do all this, and I find I can't access the folder with all of my
files (i.e. the actual Documents And Settings profile from the old
installation). It says:

"(Folder Name)

C:\Documents and Settings\(Folder Name)\My Documents is not accessible.

Access is denied."

Now, I believe I know why access is denied, and that's because the
profile was passworded. It is either that, or that I turned off the "Remote
Access" thing is disabled.
Yes, I could've made this a lot easier to read & understand, but that
would've taken time, and I do not have enough of that right now. Please
Help!!!!

Thank you ever so much...

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!
"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei"

Neither of the mentioned solutions above worked (they were both pretty
much the same anyways, heh). See, when I go into Properties, there is no
"Security" tab. The closest thing is, when I click the "Sharing" tab, there's
two sections: "Local sharing and security" and "Network sharing and
security". Under "Local sharing and security," there's the following:

"To share this folder with other users of this computer only, drag it to the
Shared Documents folder.

To make this folder and its subfolders private so that only you have access,
select the following check box." Then it has a little check box that's greyed
out (non-selectable).
So, I try to do the first thing, and that doesn't work. I
click-and-drag the folder to the Shared Documents folder, and I get this:

"Error Copying file or folder

Cannot create or replace My Documents: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is
not currently in use."

Okay, failed-so I go down to the next section, "Local sharing and
security". Here's what is said:

"To share this folder with both network users and other users of this
computer, select the first check box below and type a share name.
[Check Box] Share this folder on the network.
Share name:[Naming Box]
[Check Box] Allow network users to change my files

Learn more about sharing and security." <---"Sharing and security" underlined.

I check the box, type a name for the folder, [I try this with the next
check box checked & un-checked] and click apply and okay, and I get this:

"Sharing

An error occured while trying to share *folder name*. Access is denied.
The shared resource was not created at this time"

PLEASE help me get this to work, those files are very important to me. Thank
you. And I thank those who tried to help before this messege.

First off, my experience has taught me that there are two times
when people should not try to fix their computers. One is when
they're tired. The other is when they're pissed off. The reason
being is that they only get more tired and a lot more pissed off.

That said, it sounds as if you missed a step in those
instructions:

Since you're running Home Edition you have to start your computer
in Safe Mode.
Reboot your machine and start hitting the F8 key until you see
the boot options menu. Select Safe Mode.
When your PC starts you should see the words "Safe Mode"
displayed in all four corners of your monitor.
Make sure you're logged on with an account that has
administrative privileges.

Once you've got the PC running in Safe Mode follow the
instructions in the article to take possesion of that folder.

1. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and
then click Properties.
2. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security
message (if one appears).
3. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
4. In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator
if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the
Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the
contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on
subcontainers and objects check box.
5. Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following
message:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory
folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions
with permissions granting you Full Control?
All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take
ownership of.
6. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security
settings that you want for the folder and its contents

Post back if, when you startup in Safe Mode, you still can't
access that folder.
