99 Percent CPU Utilization from Explorer.exe

D

DEC33162

Windows 2000 Professional machine with Service Pack 4
installed. 8 Gig drive with 4 Gig free. CHKDSK /F /R /V
run at boot time. Defrag completed. System performance
VERY slow. Task Manger. Processes, CPU shows Explorer.exe
using 99 percent of CPU time, with and without other
programs running. File details, "Explorer.exe, 238K,
6/19/2003". No newsgroup, Knowledge Base or other TechNet
articles address this issue concerning explorer.exe, that
I have found. Backup has been completed in case wipe and
reinstall is necessary. Any known fixes out there before
resorting to this extreme?

Sounds like Explorer is corrupt. I've had this issue
before and a reinstall cleared it RIGHT UP!
