9800 pro memory speed

I want to get this straight before I tell someone they got screwed. All
9800 pro cards have 2.8 ns memory. 9800 nonpros have various makes of
memory. If a card has samsung 3.3ns memory it is definitely a nonpro. Have
I got it right? Thanks

Pro moemory is supposed to run at 330MHz. That equates to 3ns. So 3.3ns
memory is officially 10% too slow.

I believe my Pro (Crucial) has 2.8ns Samsung memory - I can reach 360MHz,
but not 366. Spec says 357... so it's pretty tight.

I suggest that your conjecture is probably true, but I woldn't file court
proceedings on the strength of it!

ATIs comparison chart between 9800pro/np says the 128 MB pro is clocked at
340 MHz while the 256 MB pro version is clocked at 700 MHz. This would mean
that slowest possible memory rating for the 128 MB version would be ~2.94ns
(1/340,000,000). So, if the chart is correct, neither 3.0 nor 3.3ns could
not be used in a pro card without breaking the specs of the memory.

Also, if there are no heatsinks on the memory modules, that may be an
indication that it's a non-pro. I'm not sure if ATI absolutly _require_ RAM
heatsinks on the pros, though.

Yeah - my bad. 340MHz, not 330MHz, and that is of course, DDR.

Typical modules are here (I think this is they)
http://www.samsung.com/Products/Semiconductor/common/product_list.jsp?family_cd=GME0203

Which means my chips are 2.86ns, rated to 350MHz... not quite as tight as I
thought, but there is nothing between 2.86 and 3.3ns.

I suspect these could be the DDR2 modules used on the 256MB version, but
that makes 16 chips! They are classed as "Engineering Sample" though, not
production.

Anybody got one and would care to give us the numbers on the chips?

My crucial doesn't have heatsinks - that might be why I can't overspec them
much.
