Hi! I upgraded my pc from W-98 to W-XP I have 500+MHz CPU
with 512MB RAM. My pc it's super slow. My other pc
running W-98 on 250mhz and 64mb ram is faster. What
should I look for or do to speedy up? Did I miss
something when I upgraded? thank you. A.S.A.P.

My recommendation would be to return to 98Se for a system like yours. You
can try turning off the eye candy by using the Classic Start look and
disabling system restore. This will help a little, but XP requires much more
horsepower to run with all the bells and whistles running.
If your pc with 98 and 250 MHz is faster, I would say you have a botched
upgrade. If you didn't remove old incompatible software or hardware before
the upgrade, this can make a big difference.

I've installed XP on a similar system slightly slower processor and with
less RAM. It performs reasonably well -- about the same as it ran with
Win98. My brother still has that system. Have offered to restore it to
Win98 but he says no. The only complaint he's had is that it's slower on
the internet when connecting from home. Of course with dialup at home and
broadband at work, that's an expected complaint.

The driver base on the WinXP CD is two years old now. You could look for
newer drivers for your hardware. Many are available now that weren't around
two years ago.

May also want to try a clean install. Much of Win98 is removed when
upgrading to the very different WinXP. The results are often better than
those to be expected when upgrading ... say, Win95 to Win98. However, the
outcome can still vary and trying a clean install could be worth your
while.

Your CPU, while above WinXP's minimum requirement, is really too
slow to provide decent performance with WinXP. You can improve things
somewhat by disabling all of WinXP's eye-candy:

1) Right-click the Task Bar > Properties > Start Menu, ensure
"Classic Start menu" is selected.

2) Right-click an empty spot on the Desktop > Properties > Themes >
select "Windows Classic."

3) Right-click My Computer > Properties > Performance > Settings >
Visual Effects, ensure "Adjust for best performance" is selected.
