98 to 2000 upgrade

Upgrading to win 2000, every thing went normal, screen said it would now take
30 top 40 minutes and no more questions would need to be answered and machine
would reboot.
Machine rebooted, and screen said please insert Windows 2000 disc, it was
already in the cd drive, removed the disc and reloaded and retried, but it
still said to load Win 2000 disc in cd drive. It would not install any more.
Any suggestions on how to make install completely??

Do you have a good backup of all your data? (this is a *must* before doing
any upgrade, and should be done regularly anyway).
I've personally found that while WinXP upgrades-in-place tend to go fairly
smoothly, Win2k was another story, and I strongly recommend clean installs
rather than upgrades.

How far does the machine get on bootup now?

The reboot now will take you into Win 98. 2000 was not complete.

Any suggestions?????

Yes. Back up your data (My Documents, your Favorites, anything else you use
such as Outlook or OE data files, to an external drive/another computer/burn
a CD....and do a clean install of Win2k by booting from the CD.

You should probably also get the latest W2k drivers for at least your NIC
and video card before doing anything else, as Win2k may not install them
properly....download these from the manufacturer's website.

This being said, sure you don't want to just go straight to WinXP, which is
better as a desktop OS, and will have a longer shelf life?

Win2K is fussy about its compatibility with hardware and some software
apps/drivers. Whether you use the upgrade approach or perform a clean install,
you are well served by running the compatibility report from the Win2K CD while
Win95/98 is still installed on the system. See this article for info about this
feature:

How to Prepare to Upgrade Windows 95 or Windows 98 to Windows 2000

This article has info regarding the installation techniques and steps of a
"clean install", which is always recommended by many others:
