I have a Windows XP box set as resource server with 24 Windows 98 clients accessing the XP box. All the clients are on one single workgroup named 'Workgroup

The problem is, at any given time minimum 3 to 4 machines cannot access the XP box.

Well a limitation is that XP Pro only allows 10 connections at a time. Perhaps you need to move up
to a server class OS like Windows 2003, depending of course on what your trying to accomplish...

Does this limitation apply only to Windows XP? There is a friend of mine who uses Windows 98 as the OS on the Resource Server. He does not face the same problem

Will moving from a Workgroup to a Domain help in my scenario?

The limitation is for XP Pro (10 Connections) and XP Home (5 connections)
and I believe that W2K has a 10 connection limit. W98 does not have a
limitation. This limitation is regardless of domain or workgroup. Note XP
Home does not support Domains. These are all good reasons to implement a
Linux server.

You mean even if I change the OS on the resource server to Windows 2000 or Windwows 2003, I will still continue to face the problem??

Hi,

No, that will solved the problem.

Does Windows XP not support more than 10 concurrent users?? If yes, what is the logic and reason behind that?

I mean I have actually used about 14 concurrent connections myself

Is upgrading to Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 the only and best solution?

Somebody told me that I face this problem because of the Workgroup. If I change to Domain, my problem should be resolved.

Hi,

Check this MS article: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314882
"If you change to Domain" --> you can only join to domain, changing to
domain mens that you upgrade it to 2003 server or 2000 server.
You can upgrade, or you can use three comps for resorce server. So you get 7
clients connected on one resource server. What ever is better for you and
cheaper. :)
