9600SE vs 9500PRO

Yup, but a lot depend on the cpu for the decoding.

For playback, even a crappy K6 or celeron 500+MHz is enough on a good
configuered system (talking from experience).

Some can decode in hardware on the card.

Yeah 9600SE do partial hardware decoding. But not sure to which extent.

That was cpu limited, but the ti4200 was reported as only a bit faster than
the 8500, and reviewing the charts at tom's shows that as well in some
games. Both are still playable, just no AA or eye candy. I've moved on
myself but comparing them to the new low end cards shows they will stick
kick cheap ass.

Just a note to tell anyone NOT to buy a Radeon 9600SE they are crap, get a
9500PRO if you can find one!!!

I have just replaced the 9600SE with a 9500PRO my first 3Dmark03 score was
2855 an increase of 61%!!!!

By the way does anyone know how to check whether a card is a 9500 or a
9500PRO? Windows, 3Dmark reckons its a 9500 not a 9500PRO?

I thought SE stood for 'Standard Edition'.

I brought a 9600SE video card and it came in a colourful retail box, but it
didn't have a load of bundled software, just the driver disk.

The 9600SE is even slower than a 9200. However it does
support DX9 where the 9200 only supports DX8. So it is
a bit of a mixed bag.

Well what you really want for cost effectivness is a standard 9500, make
sure that the memory chips are in a L-Shape pattern (2 are going vertical
and 2 are horizontal) then you can run this baby as a 9700
with 8 pipelines and better performance than a 9600, I have a standard 9500
and its running perfectly as a 9700.

U can get 9500's for around 50 Uk Pounds on ebay, but they are REALLY hard
to find.
