9500 NP- video bios won't initialize properly

I have a soltek sl-75drv5 motherboard (Via KT333 chipset). My current
graphics card is an 8500LE which works perfectly. I bought a Sapphire 9500
NP to replace the 8500LE - but when I tried it I couldn't get the PC to
post - the 9500 wouldn't initialize properly. I have tried it at every fsb
from 100 to 166 and I also tried pulling all the other cards except the
9500. Each time I tried it I just got vertical bars of coloured
chequerboard-like patterns on the monitor and no beeps and no further
progress. However, I tried the card in my son's pc and it intialized fine
first time. That makes me think there may be some incompatibility with my
motherboard. However, I know that others have used 9700s successfully on
this board so I am a bit baffled - anybody got any suggestions before I buy
a new motherboard?
