90nm vs .013micron

I'm about to buy an Athlon 64 3500+. New egg has one retail @.013 micron
for $273 and an OEM 3500+ @90nm for $355. Is the smaller die process worth
the extra $80 (& cost of heat sink)? If so, why?

Be aware that even though the test was conducted at default vcores. The
new core was 1.40v default compared to the older being 1.50v. So while the
overclock wasn't much difference between the 2, raisuing the new core to
1.50v might make a considerable difference. If you overclock it might be
worth it to get the new core, otherwise 6 of one......

Probably only for your bragging rights, otherwise no.

Also note that there is supposed to be a second and third generation
90nm cores coming out within a few months from now, and from each other;
one of them will add the SSE3 instruction set. Will that matter?
Probably not, either. Again, bragging rights. :)

Less heat is generated by the smaller core. Whether the difference is
meaningful will depend on your usage (oc'd?) and system cooling
capabilities.

Thanks for all responses. I decided to go with 90nm for the dual channel
memory and the "upgradeability".

You're right about that, and the 3000+, when overclocked, runs neck in neck
with the overclocked 3500+, as per the URL. The only problem is that for my
purposes, an OC'd cpu is a problem. That being the case, I wound up ordering
the 3500+ with the MSI plat.

If you buy an oem part you MUST add a heat sink and fan.

Thanks for the URL. I already ordered the retail 90nm from NewEgg. Paid
more, but I feel comfortable dealing with them, and buying the retail gave
me the heat sink and a 3 year warranty. Also, I heard that Tiger Direct has
trouble giving proper support. Have you had these issues?
