800 vs. 850

MarkW

I am buying a PCI Express card for my system soon and am wondering the
difference between these cards. I have been trying to decide between
NVidea and ATI. From what I've read it seems the x800 is faster than
the Nvidea 6800 but yet the 7800 is faster than the X850.
What makes my buying decision hard is I use my computer for almost
everything. I play games on it but as well use it for playing DVD's,
rendering video, graphic design, as well as general office use.
I want a card that has HDTV outputs (DVI and component) as well as
possibly digital inputs since I plan to hook it up to a HDTV with
time.
Any ideas of which cards I should look at? There are so many
different companies making these cards such as ATI, ASUS,
Sapphire,Leadtek, EVGA, MSI, BFG, and PNY, etc.

I have a ATI x800 (ATI) in a 3.2ghz P4 intel mainboard AGP.
I have a ATI x850 (xtasy) in a 3.0ghz P4 "D" asus mainboard PCIe

the x800 looks like 16 bit colour compared to the x850. The x850 is so much
better than the x800, i almost ran out and purchased a x850 agp. Caught
myself and didn't because of the pcie to agp bridge chip than most likely
trashes the benefits of the x850 in a agp slot anyway.

I do not consider the NVIDIA card at all because the ATI is so stable for
all around usage (games and workstation).

7800 at six big ones ? my limit is 5 big ones at x850 -> sometimes faster
is not that big a deal.

neither the x800 or x850 are "blurry" at anytime. I get clear crisp pictures
and text. In Final Fantasy XI online, I can read the names of the
characters clear across the AH. whoa.

the other parts of you question(s) i do not know as of yet, i haven't got
that far exploring the ATI card(s).

imho

hope this helps,

The X850 is architecturally no different than the X800, probably just a fab
process change that yields higher clock speeds. If you are getting different
image quality, then something's wrong with your system or driver
installation.
Caught myself and didn't because of the pcie to agp bridge chip than most

The bridge chip can't be a drawback because the PCIe slot is worthless
anyway.

How much money can you afford to spend? The value-card right now seems to be
the 6800GT or X800XL.

Do you have an nForce4 mainboard with SLI-support (two long PCIe slots)? If
so, it makes sense to get an nVidia card.

I have a ASUS SLI-Premium card so it does support SLI although I
wasn't planning on getting two cards at this time. I would like to
spend around $350 but would be willing to go up to $500 if necessary.

Doesn't matter. The benefit of SLI is that you can buy one card today, and
add an identical one later to improve performance. Recommendation? Either
get a 6800GT now (it's well within budget), or wait until next week when the
7800GT hits retail (and all the card prices get adjusted accordingly).

Brand preference? Either BFG (lifetime warranty) or LeadTek (quieter
cooling, superb image quality through the VGA output).
