80%+ greyed out menus - Outlook 2003 Trial version

I have installed a 60 day trial of Office 2003 including Outlook.

It installed well, imported Outlook 2000 files and generally seems
functional. I am not using Exchange but have a couple of POP3 accounts which
are connected and working

The trouble is that almost all of the menus are greyed out. I cannot create
a new message, contact etc, nor reply, forward, etc.

The product is activated with the required code and the only option the
program gives me is to fully pay for the software, which is a bit early in
the process

Any idea? It must be something really simple but I can't find it

Sounds like the program thinks the trial period has expired.
