64 Bit?

Bill

While roaming thru my set up info, I noticed, under System/Processor Info, I
have the following:

Multicore Capable = NO
Hyperthreading Capable = YES
64 bit Technology = YES (Intel EM64T)

(I have a Dell XPS Gen 5 3.8 Ghz)

Does this mean I can run the 64 bit version of Vista Beta?

Yes. The "EM64T" means your CPU has the 64-bit
extensions. The current drawback to 64-bit,
though, is the lack of drivers for a lot of
hardware. So, be aware of this and be prepared
to have problems with getting drivers. The
drivers have to be written in 64-bit code to
work on x64 systems.

Thanks for the reply John Boy. I have an empty HD I can install Vista 64 bit
on. I had the 32 bit version there for several weeks so I am familiar with
the some of the circumstances involved in the beta program. I don't need any
drivers other than the audio (Creative Audigy 2 Z - I believe they have beta
drivers) and the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 (I think they have beta drivers
available also).
I am just curious to see what, if any, differences I would notice from the
32 bit version. I have the CDs for both 32 and 64 bit.
OR -
Maybe someone a whole lot more familiar with the versions' differences could
let me know what to expect. Am I wasting my time trying the 64 bit version
on the ''curiosity'' factor ;o)

Hi,

Differences? None that are visual. The 64bit version makes use of the
hardware resources better than 32bit, visually they are the same.

I tried the 32 bit flavour then the 64 bit and limited drivers or not the 64
bit flavour wins by an extraordinary margin :)

Yes, Your Computer should be able to run X64 Windows Vista Beta 2, RC1, and
RTM just fine.

P.S. I am currently running X64 Windows Vista Build 5472 on my Dell XPS
600, and it sounds like our computer's are Virtually the same (XPS Gen 5 was
superseded by XPS 600).

I agree. I run them side by side and find my preferences are strongly with
x64.
