64 bit os and xp pro

I have a system that was built for me locally. MSI k8t Neo motherboard, AMD
Athlon 3200 64 bit processor, 1gb ram. I am running xp pro with sp2. I want
to try the second generation trial edition of the 64 bit os. But I don't want
to loose what I have on xp pro untill I see that it is going to function
properly. I just purchased a seagate sata drive. What I want to do if
possible is install the 64 bit os on this drive. Then I understand that when
I boot the computer will ask me what drive to boot from? If this is so and
all goes well what hapens to the bios on my system. Will 64 bit change them
and if so when I boot back in xp pro will this change the bios back? Any help
suggestions instructions etc. will be greately appreciated. Thanks

You will not be able to activate the preview version, as the OS has gone
gold and been released to manufacturers (RTM). A preview will be available
shortly.

Once the trial version is available, you will be able to dual boot with XP
and XP64.
The trial version will operate for 180 days. after that period of time, you
will have to purchase the full OEM version, or remove the trial from your
system.

Explain what you mean by "serious problems". You appear clueless in which
case you should avoid 64 bit for the moment.

P.S. And no, XP doesn't change BIOS settings. Why would it need or want to?
Sorry I can't read your mind.

You will not be able to activate RC2. The OS has gone gold, so the preview
program is over. You will have to wait until the Trial version is released.

It may be because I had already activated the preview version before, but I
just reformated, reinstalled, and reactived the preview version with no
problem.
