599 template limit

There appears to be a funny 599 template limit in PowerPoint. Once you have
more than 599 templates in the default template directory, some applications
that automatically create slides hit an odd "index out of range error". The
solution is simple, (move some templates into a new directory) but I wonder
if Microsoft knows about this or if anyone has come across this problem?

Can anyone throw any light on this issue?

What line of code does the application fail on?

Does PPT itself fail when manually repeating the same operation?

IOW, first narrow down the problem. Is it the app or PPT itself?
It might be (and in fact sounds very much like) the app has allocated a
600-element array for storing template filenames and has run off the edge of
the array, fallen, and can't get up. ;-)
