5731

New definitions available 5731. Only problem is at the
moment, my definitions are telling me I am updated to
5731, but every time I click update, it keeps updateing
from 5729 to 5731. I suppose it will sort itself out
eventually. Other than that I have been very lucky and
had no problems with 1.0.614.

Almost everyone (if not everyone) has this update problem. The solution is
the manual update using plun's procedure:

"Right click on MSAS icon within systray and choose shutdown.

Right click and "Save target as..."
http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcDeterminationData.gcd

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd

Copy/paste these files to Program files/Microsoft Antispyware

Restart MSAS and "check for updates"

Done until MS realize that this is a bug.............."

Sorry plun, but I am new to all this. I checked earlier
and my definition were showing that it had accepted the
latest update, now it has gone back to 5729 and still
keeps updateing again. I have tried what you suggested,
but being a bit of a novice, I don't fully understand. I
right clicked on MSAS icon in system tray and chose
shutdown. When it asked do you rely want to shutdown
MSAS, I click yes, but then I got stuck. You say right
click and "save as target". Where do I right click. Would
it be easier to wait until MSAS accepts the updates?

Well thats up to you but this is really easy.

Point with your mouse/cursor on one URL and right click
and choose within right click menu "Save target as.." OK

Remember where you download them !

Do the same for all three.

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd

Open Windows Explorer, copy these 3 files to Program files / Microsoft
Antispyware and
thats it.

MSAS must be closed "shutdowned" when you paste these new files.

Do not believe the Help-About information re the signature level you
have installed. For 5731 follow this procedure and then check the actual
files on your system to ensure you have the newest files. If you don't
know how to download files and then copy and replace to the MSAS folder,
you may not want to try this, and instead wait for Microsoft to fix
this. It may be a long wait.

"(1) Right click on MSAS icon within systray and choose shutdown.

(2) Right click and "Save target as..." (for each of these links):

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcDeterminationData.gcd

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd

Copy these files to C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\ or wherever
you installed MSAS.

Restart MSAS and "check for updates" "

I edited the above for (hopefully) clarity.

You right click on the three URLs below (in this message, the three *.gcd
files). I think he told you to right click on the MSAS logo.

Followed your directions and it works great. Maybe you should be working for
Microsoft, as they do not appear to know what they are doing ;)

No I am not, In all messages in the beginning I first

And your name was also in others replies example from Andre.

Further your workaround was changed with uncompressed files.
ald also brought from others.

About the name "pluns procedure" it was Mikolajs name.

Well, is MSAS working .................. ;)

I believe that this workaround is community owned as I wrote
to Mikolaj.

Bill ! if you havent seen it............

Just download these compressed files from Spynet, credit to Taxman

"TaxMan presented the following explanation :

Here are the three URLs to manually download the definitions:

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcDeterminationData.gcz
http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditScanData.gcz
http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcz

The three files you get are actually ZIP files and have to
be decompressed into your folder.

Hope this works for you."

- Extract them with Winzip or 7-Zip ( I was using 7-Zip)

- Shutdown MSAS

- Copy extracted files to MSAS folder and overwrite existing def files.

- Restart, 5729, dated June 24

TaxMan explained on 2005-06-27 :
I managed to find a source for the compressed *.gcz
definitions by looking in the logs. Uncompressing those
into the program folder seems to have fixed the problem for
me. My *.gcd definitions are now dated June 24 and when I
do a manual update it says my definitions are current.

Earlier it reported up-to-date definitons, but the actual
files were from June 16 and you are right, they were
untouched by the pseudo-update which would keep looping if
you tried additional manual updates.

Hi Taxman

Great !!!

I am to lazy to search for these definitions, where did you find them ?

fileC:\Program\Microsoft AntiSpyware\temp.zip, cannot see this one.

No, he is not. He even asked me to not call it this way :)
I've call this method "plun's procedure" because I saw it many times (and
only from him) suggested to other users.
So it's only my mistake if you are the true inventor of this recipe. I
apologize.

Plun gave you the appropriate credit, but these things gloss over with time,

Where can a person go to check for updates and install them manually, until
this problem is fixed ?
