550 [PERMFAIL] destination not valid within DNS

Hello,

I'm using Outlook 2002. I can receive emails OK - but cannot send emails.
I get the error message "550 [PERMFAIL] destination not valid within DNS". I
used to be able to send and receive OK. Recently I installed XP SP2 and
change providers. So I'm not sure which one is causing the problem.

Would anyone have information that will help me troubleshoot this issue?

Contact your ISP - make sure you're using the right SMTP server for outbound
mail and have it set up with the settings they need.

Thanks for your help Lawrence. I contacted the ISP (Comcast). They had me
use their web mail to send myself mail. Since that worked - they claim it to
be a Microsoft issue. They suggested I install SP3 for Office XP. In fact
this SP3 does say it resolves the issue I'm having. Unfortunately it did not
resolve it. So know I am looking for someone who knows of log files, etc...
that might help troubleshoot the issue.

The fact it refers to a DNS entry makes me feel like it still might be on
Comcast's side.

Yes, and when you use their webmail you aren't making a connection to their
SMTP server the way you are in a mail client. Did you verify all your
settings with them? You mentioned changing providers - are you perhaps using
your old ISP's SMTP server?

Could you turn on diagnostic logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and post
the OPMLog.log file (preferably as an attachment) after you encounter the
problem?

I did as you said. I will attach the log when i get home. However, I did
not see any errors. However, I did get some emails to send. It turns out
that I had a large distribution list. When I changed it to only a few names
- the email sent right away. So I started to send the email in blocks of 20
names or so. However, I would still have random problems. What I determined
is that some email addresses had problems. What I think is happening is that
the SMPT server I'm using might be validating each destination. When the
destination does not exist - it hangs my whole email. So things with
hotmail.com, yahoo.com, comcast.net, hp.com, etc... work. However some wierd
email addresses do not work. Doe this make sense?

Most mail servers don't actually validate addresses during the SMTP
protocol (because it takes too long), but rather do it in the background
after they've accepted the message and return a non-delivery receipt for
any recipients that turn out to be invalid. However, some do actually do
as you're guessing, so that might be the problem. A log file that was
taken when one of the errors occured is what's necessary - one with no
errors won't help much.

I telneted to the SMTP.COMCAST.NET server on port 25 and did the manual SMTP
commands "HELO, MAIL FROM, etc...". I found that I have a few offending
email addresses that cause my problem. Here is what I wrote to Comcast.
What do you make of this issue. When I do the RCPT TO:<[email protected]>" - it
hangs for 2 minutes before providing a 450 error which is different than the
550. So my problem is really the 450. Outlook must timeout during the 2
minutes.

I've been having trouble sending emails out. I've narrowed it down to
particular email addresses. I have been looking at SMTP logs and doing some
manual SMTP commands. When I enter a bogus email I get the error "550
[PERMFAIL] destination not valid within DNS". It returns this error
immediately. However, on some addresses it hangs for about 2 minutes before
giving me an error "450 [TEMPFAIL] destination not valid within DNS". The
fact it hangs for 2 minutes causes Outlook to not send my emails. Can you
please trouble shoot this for me. One of the addresses that causes the
problem is "(e-mail address removed)". The prefix does not matter - its the "rsvl.net"
that causes the hang.

rsvl.net doesn't appear to exist in the Internet's DNS (i.e., it's not a
valid domain name). That's why the hang. Comcast's mail router is looking
up rsvl.net and eventually it fails. However, rsvl.com does exist. Perhaps
that's the problem.

Brian,

So why does it just not send me a "mail could not be delivered" error. I
never used to get this kind of activity before. The way it is now is that I
need to go through each email to try to find the offender.

At work I use Outlook as well. It does not hold up the email.

So is this a function of Comcast's SMTP or is it something I can configure
in my Outlook?

SMTP rules state that you MUST receive a non-delivery report when a message
can't be delivered.

It depends on how the domain name service is set up and which machine is
doing the DNS lookup. Non-authoritative DSN servers must defer to DSN
servers higher up the food chain. Each level must wait for the level above
to respond or until the current level timeout occurs. It would surprise me
if your local client is trying to do the DSN lookup, but I can't tell from
here. If it is, then you'll see the delay. That said, though, I wasn't
aware that Outlook does any DNS lookups, defering to the router (the SMTP
server) and letting it have any delays that may occur. So, the short answer
is, I don't know of anything in Outlook that you can configure, and I don't
know why you would see the delay.

There is nothing you can configure in Outlook to affect this, other than
increasing your server timeouts (on the Advanced tab for your account).
The fact that Comcast's SMTP insists on going off and validating the
destination domain while in the SMTP protocol (and takes a long time to do
it, apparently) is the problem. That's why many SMTP servers do this check
outside the SMTP protocol once the message has been accepted.
