5472 Build Observations

Lang Murphy

Just got the 5472 build today...

Install code seems much more polished, with caveats... still needed to
supply SATA controller driver during install... and install "saw" two floppy
drives, A and B, when there is only one. I'm kind of surprised SATA is not
supported "out-of-the-box" yet.

Windows Mail now works with my NG server when it barfed in 5384 due to too
many NG's ( > 25K, I think...), so that's cool. Used to have to read this NG
from my XP box. Now reading and writing from Vista. One difference... I
think, but could be wrong, that in 5384 Mail set up an account for hotmail
like, uh, butter. Not so in this go round.

Turned off UAC but still getting UAC prompts. Not on everything, but if I
turned it off, don't think I should be seeing -any- UAC dlg boxes... when I
install anything, screen goes black then I get a UAC dlg that asks if I want
to trust the install program. This, UAC, is still a work in progress,
methinks.

Flip 3D... thought it was supposed to be much cleaner in this build. If
so... I don't see it.

When I DL'd 5472, it was id'd as RC1. Now, gotta admit, it's been a decade
since I was last involved as an active beta tester (W2K) but... I thought,
although I could be "disremembering," that RC1 immediately preceded RTM
(Release to Manufacturing). Heh, heh, heh... I don't think
sooooooooooooo....

Well, that's all I have for now... just first day impressions. Will keep
hammering on it.

Regards,

Lang

Both 5472 and what they will call RC1 are no where near genuine"release
candidates." They have chosen to name the builds that are foreplay for the
next Milestone build with the Milestone's name. It's just marketing hype to
give people who get cache and a lift the feeling they have the latest next
new thing and are more cutting edge proficient. It's the same thing that
gets the car companies to pay a shrink from NYC who was featured in the
NYTimes Style section one Sunday millions of bucks to tap the inner
primitive reptilian brain in people.

A release candidate is supposed to be suitbable for release--hence the name.
It's not going to be near that in Vista. Instead it's going to be a poster
child for the writing on the wall--back off--stop the feverish sloppy slap
together attitude that is going on at Redmond this afternoon and rationally
attack the features and many system areas in Vista that need fixing like SFC
and fix them.

If it takes another 3-5 months to do it then "tough" --"just do it!" should
be the motto. If I'm Jim Allchin right now with my sincere penchant for
excellence I have to be having a real quintissential Prozack moment and the
way to handle this is to call everyone in for a meeting or however many
meetings it takes to address all the teams and the thousand to two thousand
putting Vista gogethers and tell them to relax and take their time and stop
the "cramming all nighter" mentality for Vista that most of us have
experienced in some college or graduate school studying for an exam that
posed a fear factor.
