4GB RAM

Hello, I have a new HP desktop PC with Windows 2000 SP4 installed and 4GB
RAM. Windows only "sees" about 3.2GB of that 4GB of memory. Does anyone know
how I can get it to see the entire 4GB? I know there are limitations with the
32-bit architecture, but I understood that Win2K could support up to 4GB.
Would inserting the /PAE switch in BOOT.INI resolve this problem, or is that
just for Windows 2000 Server, etc. . .? Thank you.

Regards,

Randy

you will still come up a little short.

/PAE is required for windows to see MORE than 4GB of ram.

The server is taking some of the memory for the PCI bus mapping (or
something like that) ... its totally normal for servers with 4GB of ram to
show as little as 3.5 to 3.6 gig.

what is your server doing? What does it run ?

Hello,

Thank you for your replies: The server has one 15GB partition (host), along
with 2 x 160GB partitions running VMWare, on which I will be building several
virtual machine environments. Those VMs will run programs like a MySQL
database.

So, if when I right click My Computer and look under the General tab and it
now reads as: "3.2GB memory....Physical Address Extension" this does not
necessarily mean that Windows 2000 "sees" the entire 4GB of memory? Or is it
a reality that, as pointed out, some of the memory is taken up by hardware
(BIOS)? Thanks again for your assistance.
