In default screen, original settings, first run since install, I can see
headers in a newsgroup, but when I click on a header, or double click, the
message text does not appear in the lower window.

Tried various settings, no luck.

Advice?

Not sure how to solve your problem, but you'll have better luck in
news.software.readers.

In default screen, original settings, first run since install, I can see
headers in a newsgroup, but when I click on a header, or double click, the
message text does not appear in the lower window.

Does the double click create a blue arrow in front of the header (marked
for later download)? In that case 4D might be in offline mode. Change
this via Online menu or just hit Ctrl+o.

Thanks to all.

BeAr, thanks very much, that fixed it. I dislike going to those newsgroups
with basic questions as they rarely answer them.

I haven't seen yet how to change the listing of headers to IIRC, ascending,
where the most recent is on the bottom of the list. Looked through the
settings, don't see it.

BTW, I was looking through old posts from April, and saved some good data
you posted on (not) registry cleaning.

Thanks,

Mike Sa

Depends.
I've seen some very basic questions answered in news.software.readers.
And the German de.comm.software.40tude-dialog has more than half of
its traffic from newcomer questions, I'd guess. But although sometimes
you could get an English answer, there, it's not encouraged to ask
in English. (Of course.) Some regulars which do speak English can be
found in nsr, too. But so are some users of 4D in acf. ;-)

Hm. Don't remember such posts, myself. (If you don't talk about the
2 postings from yesterday and today.) But, however, one can live
happily when forgetting the fact to have forgotten... ;-)

I see the (+), Sort by checkbox, selected Date, but don't see the Apply
button. Still can't get the current post on bottom.
This may not be the setting I want.

I'm not seeing something?

Thanks,

It is a button with only a picture on it. You find it on the same bar as
the <[ ] Rev Sort by> checkbox. It is on the most right side, alongside
the 3 filter drop-down lists. Until you hit that button, nothing you
selected or changed in this bar will take affect.
Still can't get the current post on bottom.

You need "Rev-sort-by#Tread,Date" or "Rev-sort-by#Date". The latter can
also be accomplished by clicking onto the column header of the date
column. Depending of your current sorting you need to click either once
or twice. You see a small triangle alongside the word "date" in the
column header indicating the search direction.
This may not be the setting I want.

Read QuickStart-TheUserInterface of 4D help to get further information.

It appears as an icon of a multipage document.

I selected Rev- sort by Thread, Date, than clicked on the document icon
above. Since then, the setting shows so it is applied.
But it has not effected the header arrangement.

I will dig into the help file.

What 40tude needs is a clear selection Ascending/Desending as in other
programs.

Thanks for the help, if I can't solve this, there is Xnews and Free Agent.

I'm still not sure that I get your wishes right. You want the most recent
post on bottom. That would require a non-threaded view:
<[x]Rev.sort by [Date]>.

But you also mentioned "Thread" in your sorting scheme. To sort threads
by first available posting with most recent thread on bottom you need
to apply:
<[Thread, Max.Score,Rev.Date]> or <[Thread, Avg.Score,Rev.Date]>

Both only differ if you do use scoring. Else the scoring part just
has no effect on the sort order. The <[x]Rev. sort by> switch has no
effect in these sortings.

You can't sort threads on last posting received, though, without applying
scoring based on date/time received. - IMHO. - This would not be a too
easy thing to accomplish... ;-)
What 40tude needs is a clear selection Ascending/Desending as in other
programs.

It has some predefined sorting orders, which may sometimes seem a bit
limited. But these orders can be applied in almost too many places:
* Menu Group->DefaultGroupOptions->Sorting/Scoring
* the same from Settings menu
* Menu Group->SelectedGroupOptions->Sorting/Scoring
* the same from Settings menu
* Sort/Filter-Toolbar
* direct access of column headers of the header pane (consecutive
left mouse clicks change the sorting based on the definition
appointed to that column)
* Menu Settings->Layout->EditHeaderListColumns->->->SortBy
* the same from right click onto the column headers of the header pane

In any of these cases you clearly see the main sorting criterion
indicated by a gray triangle inside the column header of *that*
column of the header pane which is related to the main sort order.
