404 errors on JavaScript pages - can't run patch

Hi all,

I hope someone can help me. I have a customer who is running Windows XP
and who appears to have exactly the issue discussed in knowledgebase
article 827667 [1], `"HTTP 404 - File Not Found" Error Message When You
Try to Visit Web Pages That Are Opened by JavaScript Functions in
Frames or in Windows'

The particular webpage in question is part of a site which shows online
billing information or somesuch - the front page shows fine, but this
404 error is shown in the "data" frame once he logs in. The same page,
with the same user & login, will load fine on other machines. Viewing
the page source confirms it has JavaScript elements - well the
naviagtion frames do, at least, and KB 827667 is indicated as the
probable solution on a Google search for "404".

Now the thing is that the q827667.exe patch won't apply on his system,
complaining that Internet Explorer 6 SP1 is required. Internet Explorer
6 SP1 won't apply because it complains that a later version is already
installed - and the latter seems indeed to be right, as IE's about box
mentions SP1.

Going to the Windows Update site & running "Scan for Updates" offers no
critical updates for download, and only an handful of apparently
unrelated recommended updates. Applying the recommended updates makes
no differenence. Going to the "Show update history" page, however,
shows a number of updates which have failed to apply. The user had some
very intrusive spyware which I have removed, and I wonder if that could
related to the failed updates, however it is not obvous how to reapply
them.

Is there anyway to force a complete reinstall of Internet Explorer 6,
and is this a good idea..?

I'd be tempted to try the brute-force method of removing the entire
Windows Update history from the machine, so that all updates are
downloaded again. Is this possible, and is it advisable..?

Alternatively is there a way of just forcing this update to apply and
getting it to ignore that the wrong version of IE seems to be
installed..?

Has anyone else experinced this issue, and how does this group
reccommend dealing with this..?

TIA for all comments & suggestions,

Stroller.

Have you tried running sfc /scannow? You will need the XP CD to do
this.
Note the space between c and /.
