40 & 80 wire ide cable question

My HD use 80 wire IDE cable on IDE 1 & CDRW use 40 wire cable on IDE 2.

1)What happens if the cables are accidentally swapped? (HD use 40 wire &
CDRW use 80 wire)

2) Any problems if HD & CDRW are swapped between IDE 1 & 2?

TIA

40 and 80 pin ribbons will determine how fast the data can be transmitted. 80 pin will allow UDMA/ATA100 speeds on the HD's. The
forty pin is usually used for Roms as most dont do data over UDMA66. By swaping you would simply slow down the transfer speed, no
adverse things should happen.

Just get another 80 wire IDE cable to hook up your optical device since the
better grounding allows for cleaner signals to be passed from the cd rom
device. It won't make it any faster but it won't hurt anything either.

Actually UDMA 33 is tops for 40 wire. To do UDMA66 and faster, you
need the 80 wire.
