4 second system freeze after closing applications

After closing an application, my system becomes unresponsive to any input for
3 to 4 seconds. The mouse pointer moves, but doesn't respond to clicks.
Also cannot type anything on the keyboard. When the system "wakes up" the
mouse clicks and keyboard input does not appear.

This doesn't happen consistently; about 30% of the time.

WinXP SP2 PRO
2 Gigs RAM
S-ATA HD

Anyone have an idea what this could be? I am not running any
disk-monitoring apps, or virus software, and it happens on any account I log
into on this machine.

Ah. That makes a difference. One of my computers started doing that a while
ago and, just before I closed a program, I fired up Program Manager. Then, I
watched to see what happened. Turned out that there was a flurry of disk
activity, followed by some rapid reshuffling of RAM contents.

In your case it might be the same, or not. It's hard to tell. I have a
feeling though that it may be related to disk access with that S-ATA drive.
Are your drivers showing any inconsistencies in Hardware Manager?

In my case, there is no disk activity at all, just a frozen machine. I don't
see any ram activity, or higher than usual process usage (watching with
taskman).

What did you do to solve your particular case?

All my computers run 24/7/365 and this particular one had been up for over 6
weeks. I rebooted it and the problem went away. If you aren't set up to
need a password to access your computer (instead, it just boots up to desktop
totally without any Operator input) then you might consider changing that to
have to input a password. When you first start it, the drivers take a finite
time to load and settle down (the system drivers, not those used by the user)
and the delay of having you put in your password sometimes helps greatly.
