4 non-printing L-shaped marks, one in each corner of document?

I have on my screen when I open a blank document four non-printing L-shaped
marks on the edge of the margins. They do not affect the document, but are
driving me crazy. Do you have any insight as to what this might be?

Please help! I am using Microsoft Word 2003 professional.
