3ware RAID1: harddisk crash, rebuild of the array

Somebody here who can tell me how to rebuild a RAID1 after inserting a
new disk?

1. Has the old array to be deleted?
2. Has a new array to be created?
3. If 1. and 2. are executed, then 3ware-BIOS asks: either disks will be
destroyed (Y/N). IS THAT RIGHT if I what to copy the existing disk to
the new disk (RAID1, mirrror)?

Unfortunately 3ware has no user-friendly BIOS that helps rebuilding a
RAID1 after a disk crash.

1. Has the old array to be deleted?

No do not delete it. This is crucial.
After adding the replacement drive, go into the raid bios
screen (accessible shortly after your motherboard bios
screens have displayed, by hitting the appropriate keyboard
key. See the raid manual if you don't know that key.

You would assign the new member (drive) to the existing
array. It may then give you the option to rebuild the
array, or you might find it faster to boot to windows(?) and
use the RAID manager software (from the motherboard or raid
card CD or manufacturer's website) to rebuild the array.

2. Has a new array to be created?

No. All you are doing is assigning this new drive to be a
member of the existing array that the other remaining drive
was already a member of. Do not create or delete anything.

you already had the array. "Create" would mean you don't
want any of the data, you want to start over with empty
drives. Delete just gets rid of the array before you
created a new one.

Since you want to rebuild, you ONLY want to add the new
drive to the existing array, not create, not delete.

Unfortunately 3ware has no user-friendly BIOS that helps rebuilding a
RAID1 after a disk crash.

If you have not assigned the new drive to be a member of the
array, there would be nothing to rebuild (yet). I suggest
you only do this much then boot windows(?) and use the raid
manager software.
