I just aquired a new laptop for myself and got the chance to finally setup a
home network with that and my desktop. I wanted to be able to have all my
song files on both my laptop and desktop. So naturally i share my music
folder on my desktop and do a copy of them to my laptop.. sounds easy
enough?? well after a few hours the files that are added to my new laptop
disappear. They still remain on my old PC but have evaporated off my drive on
the laptop (like they were never moved to it at all, even disk space goes
back to full capacity, no trace of any new files).. So then I go and purchase
a crossover cable which works like a charm with XP pro.. however again the
files disappear. I tried to place them in different directories with
different folder names. All gone!! no matter if i copy 10 or 1000. I use
musicmatch and it creates a directory for any artist that you rip from a CD.
So if i rip an eminem cd, a folder is created labeled EMiNEM. Whatever folder
I transfer all my music to those directories stay there (only empty.)
WEIRD!!! At first i thought it was Musicmatch creating a licensing issue and
automatically deleting them, because all my music gets tagged. So i erase
MMJB and just use WMP10. No luck there either. It doesnt matter because even
i download a new file that has not been ripped or tagged it erases too. Pls
help. Both systems running XP PRO SP2/MS AntiSpyware/AVG 7/ completely clean
of any bugs or viri. The file extension on the disappearing files can be
either MP3/WAV/WMA. This is now my 3rd request for help and I need help.

MS AntiSpyware might be deleting the music files if it thinks that the
files or the application that uses them are spyware and if you give it
the OK to delete what it finds. That happens with files downloaded
using KaZaA. as documented at the bottom of this page:

Some of these files probably came from Kazaa. But a majority did not. Would
it not matter in this case? An MP3 is an MP3 and MS Spyware removes them if
you have Kazaa installed. So by removing Kazaa then ultimately my problem
should disappear?? Where can I clean the registry of Kazaa?

I'm sorry, but I can't answer your questions. I don't know what files
you had, where they came from, where you put them, what Microsoft
AntiSpyware found on your computer, or what you told it to delete.

I recommend posting your questions in a news group devoted to
Microsoft AntiSpyware. See:

Where can I clean the registry of Kazaa?

If you allow MSAS to remove Kazaa, it will also remove any mp3's you have
stored in the shared folder - period. It will NOT touch other folders.

There are virus's out there that target mp3's. About 1 1/2 years ago I lost
all of my songs the same way. Luckily I had just backed them up the week
prior so, at best, I lost half a dozen. And yes, it was a virus.

Thanks for your replies. But the issue still stands. I have removed Kazaa
(mainly because everything that comes off there is crap anyway.) I tried
moving some of my MP3s from my old PC and they disappeared again. Is there
something in the registry that would still be making this happen? Should I
run a Hijack This! and let you guys look into that? This is just the wierdest
thing in the world and nothing seems to work. The only way I've kept them on
PC lately is in a RAR file. But as soon as I extract to listen to them they
evaporate. I'm baffled, and I've been dealing with XP for about 3 years now
and can't find anything on this other than the virus you'vve mentioned (I'm
clean).
