3G Mobile data cards

I am trying to use Windows Messenger to chat and use Remote Assistant (to save the hours on the telephone to my Dad!) using a mobile 3G data card but it doesn't work. All the supplier will say (Orange in the UK) is that it is a configuration issue in Windows Messenger. The 'Chat' seems intermittant at best and if you issue a Remote Assistant request it and then the other end 'Accepts' it is acknowledged but then the system times out trying to connect and finally says that the hostname could not be resolved. Can anyone help?

Sounds like Remote Assistant uses a different port to Instant Messenger and
that Port is blocked by Orange... Most Mobile Network operators in the UK
block Ports used by Instant Messenger application because it my affect the
SMS revenue...
