3d screensaver freezes

The screensaver is set for 10 mins. The screensaver is 3d flying objects.
When it goes to screensaver, it freezes up the entire computer. When I try to
change to change the settings, it freezes up the entire computer. I can
change it in safe mode but does not keep the changes. What can I do?
