I'll be getting a few cheques coming in shortly and am finally looking to buy a telly.

Have decided 37" is minimum size, and probably ideal size. Also want 1080 res.

I've been looking around and frankly I'm beginning to go a bit cross-eyed looking at all the TV's out there :D

So I was wondering if anybody here could give me a link to such a thing at a reasonable price.

Will also consider 40" or 42" if price is right but I think 37" would be right for my living room.

My media PC has a Hauppage twin TV tuner and enough hard disk space to make recordings or I may use that Hard Disk TV Recorder I bought from Big Pockets.

I'm assuming my 7600GT pci-e 256Mb graphics card will plug into an HDMI input with a DVI to HDMI adaptor? If not I suppose I can use the VGA input on the TV.

I'm also seriously thinking of buying a games console and not buying any more PC games as I am seriously sick of all this DRM and activation crapola. And after looking and reading long and hard, decided that my console of choice would be a Sony PS3.

Yes, a Sony, despite me not being fond of that company, to me it looks like being the best console. The X-Box breaks down too much but most of all, you can use a mouse and keyboard with the PS3.

I am considering this, and if I did go games console, I would keep just the one Windows machine (Vista) and use Linux exclusively on my other PC's.

A little radical perhaps, but that's what I'm considering.

I'd keep Windows basically for the games I already own, MS Office (although I may eventually completely migrate to Open Office). Also for video editing software. If I can find something like DVD Shrink and Pinnacle Studio that works in Linux, then I'm sold. And I wouldn't mind paying for the software either, not all Linux software is free.

Well, that's my thoughts atm, have been thinking long and hard, I'd welcome any suggestions for a TV and also any comments, for and against, on the Playstation 3, particularly from anybody who's used a mouse and keyboard with it.

Oh, and if anybody has one of those Vistron or Sense TV's from E-Buyer, let me know if they're any good.

Well, definetly LCD, Samsung, Toshiba, LG all use Samsung screens now so only real difference is style.

Samsungs win on styles.

That was my choice when i got a new TV but they were always out of stock in my area.

Plus you instead of connecting a 7600GT to your new tv, you can just have the PS3 on the same network as your media PC and you can access all the films via the PS3.

40" TV, 30,000:1 contrast, oh my.

PS3 rules, i have had both (xbox 360) PS3 is just better, people only buy xbox as they can't afford a PS3.

Thanks for feedback.

I've rather taken a fancy to This one which seems almost identical to the one you linked to, it's actually £30.00 cheaper at Dabs, I'll have to check out the price at Amazon, as Amazon are really good suppliers to deal with, especially when it comes to something expensive.

Have you used a mouse and keyboard with your PS3? Online gaming any good? DVD playback? Steering wheel?

No haven't used keyboard and mouse, online games i've played is COD4, GTA4, if you have 8MB broadband or higher then gaming is fine online, however others players do lag sometimes.

Nice TV, although reading from your posts it seems you like to have the best and why not, get a 40" with the massive contrast.

Its £4 more than the 37" you posted.

£4 plus £19.91 postage :D

Wondering if I could collect from a Dixons store.

And I don't always have the best but the stuff I do have I want to do the job, is all.

Look at the spec in my sig, that's not the best, the core system is coming up to two years old.

Not yet, not yet.....

Although on my doormat when I returned home today was the cheque I'd been waiting on :thumb:

Give that a week to clear and I'll seriously be looking to purchase.

Cheapest I've seen 80Gb PS3 is £300 or £310.00 with one game such as that new Star Wars one or Call Of Duty 4.

Play.com & Amazon are the same price.

YOu don't really need a 60GB or 80GB PS3, try and get a cheap 40GB, you don't need the space on the HDD if you're gonna hook it up to your PC via network.

I got a 320GB 2.5" SATA2 HDD for £35 on Ebay from Malaysia and put that in, just annoy my bro who went and brought an 80GB.

Hmm, ok, I'm a total numnutz when it comes to a PS3, am I right in assuming that other computers on my network will see it as a storage device then? And that I can store data relating to PS3 on a computer sharing that network?

Does it work wireless or have to be hard wired? If hard wired, that's ok, it's location means I can plug an ethernet cable from the PS3 into a spare socket on my router.

I note the PS3 doesn't come with an HDMI lead either so presumably I'll need one of those.

I have my media PC plugged into my audio amplifier atm, I assume I'll also have to plug the TV's sound output and the PS3's audio output into my audio amplifier. Or will the PS3's audio go through the TV and to TV audio out?

This is something I haven't considered, I don't think I have enough inputs on my amplifier, they're all used up. I have: Tuner; Cassette Deck; CD Player; I-Pod, Computer; ok, just looked, I have an aux socket spare.

Does anybody know how well a keyboard and mouse work with a PS3?

And do DVD's and games both play through the HDMI connection?

I got lottsa questions :D

The only audio output on a PS3 is an optical out, so you would need an optical in on your AMP.

Otherwise sound is supported via HDMI to the TV.

Basically you have to have a wired connection on the PS3 to the router, no wireless.

Then on the menu in PS3 you can select Media Server and it picks up Windows Media player on your PC you then pick through the folders the same way as you would on PC.

The files have to be in Windows Media player or it can't them and the PS3 only supports certain DivX and AVI files so it won't play everything.

With regards to HDMI leads, lots of different ones at different prices, a gold plated V1.3 will do fine no more than £20.

Yes DVD and games both go through HDMI, you set it so DVD is upscaled to High Res, lots of settings.

You can back up your data on the PS3 via USB stick/dvd/cd, have not tried to send it directly to PC, i think it only works one way???

Hope this helps

Edit: If you know anyone with a PS3 or even a PSP then try and get a looky and have a play with the menu, is easy to learn but its worth a look first.

Thanks WF. Yes, my mate Andy has a PS3, reckons it's the business, I'll have to wander round his place over the weekend and have a play.

All the movies I have on the media PC are in DivX format and all music files are mp3.

I also have my I-Pod files on it but don't usually play them on the pc, they're just for the i-Pod, I always use Winamp to play back mp3 files for music.

Well, the best laid plans of mice and men....

My car failed it's MOT today. To cut to the quick, it's gotta go and I need some new transport.

I had put by £500.00 for MOT, service and any repairs but the total cost to do all that was actually £2K5, £1K5 of that being a new gearbox is needed.

So, weighing up the odds, 24 year old Mercedes, only does 15 mpg and even if I spent £2K5 on it, it would only be worth about £800.00 at most, I think it's going to make it's final trip to the breaker's yard :(

I have two weeks left on the MOT which gives me a chance to get something else but it does mean I'll now have no cash for a TV or PS3 :(

I will, however, be buying myself a Canon G9 compact camera as I had planned to do after selling my Nikon S500.

Why is it just when you think things are looking up something comes along and kicks you right up the nuts?

I'll miss my Merc, I've had it five years almost to the day and have thoroughly enjoyed driving it. Completely uneconomical, not green at all, but I loved it. Oh well, all good things come to an end.

I'll likely get a van or am considering getting a Volvo Estate, not sure yet.

What I'd really like to get is a Mazda MX5 sports jobbie but it's a bit awkward fixing roof bars to take ladders onto a convertible ;) Although it does actually have enough room for my tools, hmmmm

I suppose I should consider myself lucky I have some money to buy a replacement vehicle but I was rather looking forward to a big telly.

One day, one day...

So sorry to hear that Flopp's..

Tele can wait though as transport more important for work..

Flopp's just to let you know scrap value for cars has gone through the roof with the rising price of scrap metals on the market at the moment..

Dealers are paying over the odds for scrap cars right now even without an MOT so your car should still be worth £150 -£200 to a scrap dealer, don't let them fob you off with a tenner or a score like the old days, scrap cars are making big money right now and scrap dealers are trawling vehicle auctions right now buying up old cars with MOT's just for the scrap value alone..

All the best mate..

Bit of a pain that, as I know how much you liked that car! You were saying a while back about how a van would be handy though, plus the petrol savings will be huge if you were getting 15mpg. Things never qo quite to plan ;)

If you were looking for a cheaper alternative to a new TV/PS3 combo, I saw XBox 360's going for £99 in Sainsburys yesterday

Thank you both for the comments.

CL, I shall bear that in mind when getting rid of the car, a friend of mine also thought that was the case.

The last vehicle I took to a scrap yard, round about 2000 I think, I had to take it there and pay them £25.00 to take it off my hands.

I also know spares for my car are scarce so we'll see what happens. I know two specialist Mercedes breakers, one in Deptford, the other in Bow.

X-Box for £99.00 eh? A little bit tempting, but not much.

Being able to play Gears of War with saved games is to be desired...
