32-bit boot

In keeping with many users of XP-64 Pro I need to be able to boot a 32-bit
system to run certain apps.

1) Is it possible to boot XP-64 into 32-bit mode? If so, I have been unable
to find any instructions, so a pointer would help.

2) If not, then presumably one needs to install a 32-bit o/s, eg. XP, and
set up dual boot. Please confirm.

I have also seen references to a '32-bit compatibility mode' for XP-64 and
wonder if there is a KB article that discusses this.

Thanks for any help,

Colin

I don't think so. But 64-bit XP should be able to run nearly any
32-bit program.

You should be able to do that - providing, of course, that your 64-bit
hardware will run 32-bit software.

I think that's what I was talking about above, that 64-bit XP will run
32-bit programs.

You'd get better answers if you asked in a group where experts on the
64-bit version of XP hang out: microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general

I thought the *unreleased* beta or release candidate releases of Windows XP
64 had their own forums in which you are supposed to ask such questions. I
just looked at the Windows XP 64 home page and, yep, they have their own
community for that unreleased product, and the download page for it tells
you of the support options which includes a Microsoft CDO
webnews-for-dummies newsgroup. There is also a general 64-bit newsgroup on
their NNTP server where you can use a real NNTP client, like OE.

This group is for the existing and released versions of Windows XP.

XP 64 is out of beta. It is an "existing and released" version of Windows,
as you put it!

No, WinXPx64 has no such mode.

Correct. If you need to have both a 32-bit OS and a 64-bit OS, then
you'll need to dual-boot. (Or have two separate computers.)

While there certainly is a 64-bit newsgroup
(microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general) that would be more appropriate
for the OP's question, please be advised that WinXPx64 was released to
manufacturers (It's available only as an OEM product) months ago.
