30+ minutes wasted today, thanks to Vista

Last night I made the mistake of trying Hibernation.

This morning I get a BSOD--thanks again, Gates!

Then I reboot and check for updates due to Vista suggesting that I do
that to fix the BSOD.

15 minutes of downloading and installing, but wait...

Vista wouldnt shut down after the updates--stuck on the "configuring
updates" screen.

After waiting 10 minutes for it to get past that screen I shut down
manually.

Boot it back up and it configs updates and shuts itself down.


Reboot it again and it configures them AGAIN and gets to the desktop.

I rebooted again to see if it would boot normally with no delays. It does.

Total time from BSOD to normal boot was 33 minutes.

Gawd I hate Vista!!

Some of the updates I have done take more than 10 minutes to complete.
It is not wise to shut down manually while updates are being installed as
anything could happen afterwards.

You are lucky it managed to sort its self out after you stopped it in the
middle of an update.
I think I would roll it back to before the update and do them again to be
sure they actually did what they were supposed to.

The HD was not being accessed for many minutes.

Doesn't mean anything. I've noticed a few times (with Vista and XP) that
during shutdown/restart installation of updates the drive may not be
accessed for several minutes, then the access light will glow solid for a
few moments, then go back to no activity, and so on.

Even during installation of the OS, when you would think the drive light
would be on pretty much non-stop I've noticed long periods of inactivity.

What's going on is this, the system has everything it needs for that
particular update totally in memory, is sorting things out and once it's
completed that portion it will commit the needed changes to the disk.

Be patient, if it takes more than 30 or so minutes total (depending on the
number of updates and the speed of your computer over-all) and/or the screen
appears to have locked up (IE: the animations have totally stopped) then I'd
suggest waiting another 5 minutes, then manually reset the system and hope
for the best.

10 minutes is not always sufficient.
You may have inadvertently created the issue by shutting down before
the computer was ready.
The drive light is not a good indicator of processor activity.

"Gawd I hate Vista!!"
Then return it as long as purchased within the last 45 days.
Easy if you purchased in North America.
