Now that I've had to use my COMPAQ Presario 2100 laptop as
my primary computer I'm discovering it takes on average 3
minutes for windows to fully open. What can I do to speed
this up?

When you laptop finishes running the marathon (booting up), how many icon
are in the notification area (lower right hand of your screen, next to the
time)?
Then right click on the taskbar and select task manager. Under task manager,
select "performance tab". In the performance window, let me know how much
physical memory is available. This will help me with the boot problem.

Boy, you're fast! ;-) OK... there are 7 icons in the
notification area, I eliminated several already. All but
volume icon and the NAV icon pop up almost immediately,
those two take the excessive time. In the Task Manager
physical memory is 228 thousand+ unless I'm writing this
message then its 227 thou+
Thanks for you help.

Okay... open up Internet Explorer and navigate here:
http://kujoe.com/freeware/spybotsd13.exe

Download this program and follow the wizard steps after the program is
downloaded and install. The wizard will ask you to create a registry backup,
download updates and immunize you system. Do all of this. The select "start
using program". Here you will select "Check for Problems". If after the
program is finished and it finds anything, "Select Fix Problems"

Try this. If it does not fix the problem, let me know I have other things
for you to try!

Michael.

updates individually instead of both at once and it
worked. I then immunized scanned and fixed the 25 (red)
problems found. Next I rebooted and it STILL took over 3
minutes! WAUGHHHHHHH!!!! <snif-snivvle)

Eileen, if your problem is related to spyware/malware it takes a
combination of programs to clean it. Also you need to check for viruses.

Run these programs to check for spyware/malware. After installing
update them, then boot into safe mode and run them. You should run
update and run them weekly.

If these programs don't help things, then look at what other legit
programs are loading that are hanging and causing the slow boot. Go to
Start | Run, type in "msconfig" without the quotes, then OK. Go to the
startup tab. See what programs are opening. Use this site to see what
each of these might be. Eliminate those you don't want by unchecking
them. If that doesn't do it, then eliminate the rest one by one
rebooting in between to see if you can isolate the offending program.

But first run all the cleaners below and in safe mode as instructed
initially.

Make sure you have a firewall active at all times. If nothing else use
the one built into XP, but there are a variety of free third party ones
that do a better job from Sygate, Zone Alarm or Kerio.
