3.0 GHz or 3.16 GHz Intel?

Hello,

I am buying a new dual core intel CPU. The difference between a 3.0
GHz and a 3.16 GHz is $80. I need the speed, and I will be
overclocking the CPU. I wonder, If both CPUs will overclock to the
same frequency. I do not mind spending the $80, but I do not want to
waste the money. Please give me some advise.

You can do some data mining here. For whatever reason, the E8500
goes a bit higher. I suspect some of the entries on the site are
faked, which is why the charts are messed up a bit.

You can also check some of the results here, for the E8400 and
E8500, and see why the processors are different. In some cases,
the motherboards run out of FSB headroom, before the core
is finished overclocking. Which is why Intel sets the FSB so
high in the first place. Also, check the posting here, for
safe values of Vcore.

My advice is to wait until later this month. Reports on Digitimes suggest
that after the 20th July Intel will start making some changes to their cpu
line-up.
With respect to the processors that you are looking at prices will drop and
there should be a new offering soon.
I would expect that the price of the E8500 will drop to the current price of
the E8400 and the E8400 price to fall a little.

"For dual-core CPUs, Intel will launch the Core 2 Duo E8600 at 3.33GHz and
US$266, and will phase out the Core 2 Duo E8300. The company will also drop
pricing for the Core 2 Duo E8500 and E8400 from US$266 and US$183 to US$183
and US$163, respectively"
Prices quoted are for thousand-unit tray quantities
