If I install a harddrive from a defunct machine with windows xp into an other
pc also with windows xp what will I need to do to download some files from
the old harddrive onto the new? Laymens terms please. Thanks in advance.

Hello Jock,

Laymens terms, well, look at the old hard drive and it should tell you the jumper settings to make
it appear as a "slave" to the computer. Put the jumper settings as such and then hook it up to your
new computer (while the computer is turned off after a successful shutdown). The drive will appear
as a "slave" to the machine and will be recognised by Windows. Copy over your files as you would
normally do and then remove the drive after shutting down your computer.

Set the jumper on the primary drive to Master and
set the secondary drive jumper to Slave. You can then
explore the Slave drive and copy files from it, but
you may need to take "ownership"
