2900+ overheating like crazy

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2900+ (the problem)
Video: Nvidia GeForce 6600 AGP w/256meg
Ram: 2x512 meg sticks of Corsair XMS ram <- running at 400mhz,
2cas
MOBO: Soyo Dragon 600 plus

This CPU will not cooperate. I set it to it's correct clock and
multi, but it quickly overheats to 85 degrees Celsius. That
temperature, btw, is my antiburn temp, at which my comp does an
auto-shutdown, and then sends me a constant beep (more like SCREAM)
untill I pull the power cable out.
It's a nice saftey feature.

I am wondering, considering the CPU is an OEM, does it support the
heat sensor? What if it's not calibrated right or something, and
it's not actually over heating...? I went back to the store, and
had them give me a replacement one just incase it wasn't the right
CPU.

Also, it shows up as a simple "Athlon" under system info,
and on CPUident.
However, it seems to run fine at 200x10 (the correct settings), it can
boot into windows and sit there for about 2-4 minutes untill it
reaches the set tempurature.

I am wondering this, because I can simply turn the CPU anti-burn
setting to off, and then just hope the CPU isn't actually over
heating.

I know it's not my fault, because if I put my 2500+ back in, and even
overclock it a little, it never goes above 40c. I'm getting really
sick of this 2900+ scam that Micro Center did. I mean, they should
tell you if the damn thing is meant for a specific MOBO combo.
I just KNOW they are only trying to get rid of the dang things,
because they are hard to deal with and whatnot. How lame.

Someone help?

What cooling are you using? Whatever it is, is the fan spinning up to full
speed? Need more info....

The cooler is a 3 heatpipe copper type thing. Instead of a fan
blowing down, it has a turbine like thing inside the heatsink that
blows air OUTward. It works wonders, infact, in a pc mag it was
rated best cooler for the year. It keeps everything I've thrown at
it below 42 celsius, no matter what..
It's adjustable, and I keep it at full blast. (4000rpm)
So... Definately not a heatsink problem.. I'm serious about it being
a problem with the CPU, or perhaps settings.

What happens if you let the mainboard set the ratio for you. My guess
is you have something in that section set wrong, let the mainboard do
it all and see what happens.

Right. But, sounds more like the heat sink is not seated/installed properly
on the CPU.
From my experience, it's not possible to get the CPU to 85C with any
overclocking - as long as the heat sink/fan are well seated.

Well, I re-seated it twice, and it gave me the same result.. Also,
set the BIOS to reset everything to optimal, and then set th
jumper/setting to 200 mhz, and the jumper multiplier to 10x...
dunno WHAT'S going on here

I will try it again tomorrow, and tell you what happens. I have t
leave now though.

Thankyou for your help though, guys. :

Are you absolutely sure 10x is the proper multiplier? Is there an
info screen where you can check what speed the chip is really running
at? I haven't played with the 64's ratio settings myself, but on the
older amd chips the internals ran at double the bus speed to begin
with so you'd have been doing some serious over-clocking if you set
them up that way.

You must be confused with Front Side Bus Frequency, which is 200MHz.

Clock multiplier is usually locked and x10 is normal.

If he set a jumper, it isn't locked. Could you show me a website or
something that shows how these things are supposed to be set; I've
tried to find something with no luck. I'm wondering because my 3200
is running pretty darned cool, never seen it get over 100f.

A

Aldric

Well... I have an offical PDF from AMD that tells you EVERYTHING abou
their 0Fh CPU's. On the list, the 2900+ is the lowest speed 400 MH
fsb CPU they have. The resulting speed is 2000 MHz So that means, se
the FSB to the max (200, because DDR makes it 400) and you say th
multiplier is locked? So setting it at 10x on the MOBO jumper
should just be done incase it isn't locked and whatnot. I'll b
diving into this now, wish me luck

I am absolutely sure it's 10x20

I must have done something wrong, or maybe the CPU was actually th
wrong one before I traded it in for another? We'll see

It works, and it shows up as athlon XP now.
The store gave me the wrong CPU the first time around
