Right-click on any usused area (e.g. not on an icon) on the desktop
and select Properties.
Go to the Settings tab and adjust the color mode to the highest
available for the resolution you are using.

If 256 colors is the highest available setting then you need to go to
the video card manufacturer's web site and download the latest Windows
XP drivers for your specific video card model.

Note that if your computer has the video integrated into the
motherboard then the source for the drivers will be the
computer/motherboard manufacturer's web site.

Good luck

I have a similar problem. After a crash I re-installed XP from CD to repair
the corrupted file. Now, the color quality list has only the lowest 4 bit
mode and the screen is very grainy with limited color. Before the crash, the
section (within the Display of Control Panel) and had more quality modes
listed and all the pictures came out beautyfully on the monitor. How can I
correct this?

You need to install the drivers for your graphics card. If not
available on a CD that came with the system, try downloading from the
manufacturer site for the computer.

Install the correct video drivers for your video card or onboard video
chipset. Often the drivers you need are on the motherboard disk.
