256 character limit in pivot tables

I am building a string of unique codes that can exceed 256 characters. When
it does and I view the data in a pivot table, it truncates to 256. Is there
any simple way do deal with this? I thought Office 2007 increased this
limitation.

I am using this string to identify unique configurations, each defined by
the string of order codes on the invoice. I am then using the pivot table to
count the number of occurances of each unique configuration.

Hi jd

If you have opened an existing XL2003 workbook in XL2007, it will open in
compatibility mode and you will be restricted to 256 columns and 65536 rows.
Save the file as .xlsx file, close it and then re-open it and you will have
the 2007 worksheet dimensions available to you.
