250GB Not Seen At O/S Level

I have a new Intel system board which clearly sees the
250GB hard disk. However, the O/s (Windows 2000 Pro, SP-4)
will not see beyond 130GB.

I then installed a controller card manufactured by SIG and
now the O/S see's the entire disk space.

I knew that there existed an issue prior to SP-3, but I'm
running SP4. Has anyone any ideas why, when the BIOS see
the disk W2K-Pro will not?

Intel swears up and down that this board will support
disks >130GB...

Replies to this question asked previously indicate that 48 bit
addressing must be enabled in the registry. Please view some of those
previous threads for the article that provides the instructions.

1)Bios correctly identifies disk
2)Win2K sees only 130gb
3)Installed controller card now Win2k sees true size?
Is that about it?

That's exactly it, and that is why it is so bizarre:
As you say:

(1) The system board BIOS correctly identifies the disk by
both Model Number and Size;

(2) W2K w/SP-4 will only see the disk as 128MB;

(3) The addition of a SIG controller card see's the disk
correctly both at boot and within the O/S...

....makes zero sense to me also. Hence I did not modify the
registry as this would have impacted the SIG as well.

I have search KB after KB but to no avail, suffice results
that say this was fixed in SP-3.

Did the installation of the controller card add registry entries? Does
removal of the card cause the OS to go dumb again?

Is this a WD SATA drive?
If so you installed the SATA drivers, prior to installing controller card
and disk?
I assume that by installing the Controller card you will have installed the
neccessary drivers with this card.
I recently installed large hd's in Win2k sp4, they were correctly identified
in win. I checked the reg. entries, as per MS KB305098 and noticed the
EnableBigLba entry was missing.
The sys functioned correctly but on advise from MS I added the EnableBigLba
reg key.
I note that WD state by adding the controller card large disks will function
without the need for reg.to be 'updated'

see the disk as 128GB...not 250GB.

It's puzzling...I've been in IT for almost 22 years and I
don't have an answer for this one. I've gone through more
KB articles than I care to think about but they all
reference that this issue was corrected with SP-3.

greatly appreciated. Btw, Intel dumps the blame on the
O/S, not surprisingly (and I'm sure MS would point back at
them).

Your controller doubtless has built-in 48-bit sector addressing. Look it
up in the manual, or the model's web page. SIL controllers, for example, do.

I'm up against the same problem. I have modified the
registry, per MKB 305098 to enable 48 bit addressing,
restarted the computer, and disk manager still shows my
180GB drive as 128GB. My BIOS also shows the full
capacity of the drive. Did MKB 305098 leave out some
additional step you have to take to make it see the extra
space after you've enabled 48 bit addressing? Thanks.

I believe you must be at Service Pack 3 or 4 as well.
