24-pin power supply

Received a new PC case with power supply. Unit came with 24-pin TAX
main connector. Last 4 pin can be separated from the main connector
leaving what appears to be a standard 20-pin. Are these backward
compatible? Or might there be a nasty surprise after connecting to a
20-pin motherboard?

No, you're OK. That's why they make the detachable 4 pin connector, to
accomodate older motherboards.

Is that detachable 4 pin connector different that the 4 pin socket I see on
my new Biostar GeForce MB?

Completely different, I believe, although their purposes are similar.

Newer mainboards that use 24 pin ATX 2 connectors usually include the 4 pin
12V connectors as well. (Some boards have gone to 8 pin auxiliary 12V
connectors, to permit higher currents yet.)

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

To my understanding, the ability to detach the last four pins is what
makes these PSUs backwards compatible.

Those detachable 4 pins on the 24-pin power supply connector do not
get connected to anything. There should be a separate 4-pin square
which connects to your motherboard.

Did you try a memory tester such as Memtest86? http://www.memtest86.com/

Yes I tried memtest on my original ram. It showed some errors. Pulle
one stick out, it showed different errors. Tried the other stick an
it eventually locked up. Bought a brand new stick of Kingston ram an
my pc was still doing the random lock ups. Swapped IDE cables, powe
supply, no change. Was able to reformat HDD. Now it locks up whil
trying to do a fresh install of xp. Which leads me to th
motherboard. Any other thoughts
Thanks
Just tested my HDD on another pc. XP loaded without a hitch. I gues
I'm off to the PC store to swap the new ram for a new motherboard

What did memtest show with this stick of RAM?

I've had a board that caused memtest to register every stick of ram as
being bad. A new board did the trick.

That is what I was thinking. Memtest froze while testing new stick.
New MB is installed. XP installed smoothly. So far so good.
Thanks all.
