2007.ppsx

I have finished my very first 8 minute 2007.ppsx Presentation Show. I would
like to show this presentation to all of the Residents here in the Sheltered
Housing where I live. The average age is 80 years ( I am somewhere in the
middle of the average age). We have approximately 50 Residents.

I have a Lap Top that the 2007.ppsx Presentation Show is on but I need a
large screen, possibly on a tripod. I need information about how to run this
presentation from my Lap Top and also what is physically required as
*extras* that would enable me to run this show. When I have learnt more I
would like to run a monthly News Bulletin and another possibility is a quiz
( hidden questions and answers) that I have read about on this
group.Visually impaired residents would really find this to be a boon.

I am thinking of asking the Housing Association to fund me to buy the
*extras needed* so detailed information including costing would be
paramount. Can anyone please help me with this before I apply for funding. I
do not want to miss out on any of the extras. Sometime in the future if I
found that I would need anything else I would have to fund it myself. If I
present a good case and it is under £1000 pounds then I maybe successful.

I think this is also a very good way to encourage us oldies to become more
interested in computers as the Heirarchy almost always think that we aren't
intelligent and are rather childish! I would love to prove them all wrong.

A few people have seen my small very humerous animated presentation about
Aliens landing at our Sheltered Housing Establishment. They all thought it
was very funny and are willing to back me when I approach the Housing
Association for funding.

Thank you all for the tremendous help that I have been receiving on this
News Group. I have been dabbling now for a couple of months :). Getting
there quicker than I originally anticipated.

Maureen, when you say that you "need a large screen, possibly on a tripod",
what does that mean in terms of the location where you will be showing the
presentation?

Is this a dark room, just a room, outdoors, etc. How large you want the
screen to be? If you have a wall, you won't need a tripod.

So much will depend on your location -- describe it a little more.

M

Maureen

Thank you Geetesh,

Yes we have a large wall in a lounge, a screen could possibly be hung
there. We have lighting that could be switched off for a show. Would I need a
projector, and or connecting leads? I really don't know a thing about
showing Presentations. All that I have is 2007.ppsx show on my Lap Top that
runs for 8 minutes. It is a hobby which I eventually hope to share with the
residents living in this Sheltered Housing Scheme.

Once I gather together the relevant info, I would be able to apply for a
grant. I may even approach the IT department, but at the moment I am too new
to all of this and if I were to be asked a lot of questions that I didn't
know the answers to, I really would have egg on my face. I like to be armed
in readiness, with perhaps just rough estimates of costs and what would need
to be purchased. I would have looked on the internet but I wouldn't know
what I was looking for! Hope you understand all of this.

Yes, this location should work great with a projector.

You should take a look at sites of projector companies -- many of them have
projector buying guides on their sites -- and do mail their support
departments for advice.

You'll also have to learn some projector terminology -- I found this site in
a web search:

http://www.vividlight.com/Articles/3614a.htm

Make sure you understand how many types of projectors are available, and
some of them work better than others in various lighting situations -- also
get familiar with the term "lumens" -- you'll come across that all the time.

While deciding which projector you want, also look at projector screens.

Thank you Geetesh,

I think I now understand the importance about lumens, brightness of light
within a specified area. Hope that is correct. I took your advice and have
visited various web sites about projectors and I think there are a couple
costing between £150 to £300 that I think may suffice. They are rated as
four star and five star. I will continue looking. I will go on the Maplin
site later on and see what they have to offer. There is a Maplin store
nearby so this would be a handy store to visit when I have done all my
"searching homework" on all of this stuff
..
I tried to access http://www.vividlight.com/Articles/3614a.htm Internet
Explorer could not display the web page. Also I will learn about project
terminology :)
A friend of mine thinks he may have a rolled up screen that I can have to go
on the wall :)

Can't thank you enough Geetesh for pointing me in the right direction.

Good suggestions. In addition, you may want to add an extension cord and a
remote control to your request. I have a little Interlink Navigator that I
like a lot, but everyone has his/her own preference. And you can get an
extension cord almost anywhere.

Maureen

Thank you Echo.
Every suggestion at this stage helps.A remote would be marvellous. I do have
many extension leads ! ! Pensioners hoard things :) I am making a list.
Geetesh suggested (as you are aware) for me to ask for a Demo before I buy.
I would never have thought of this either.

Sometimes the best way to learn is to just dive in and start asking the
questions that occur to you. That's what we're here for -- because we've

I wouldn't count on the computers at the store to have anything. Besides,

and answers) that I have read about on this group.Visually
impaired residents would really find this to be a boon.

I am thinking of asking the Housing Association to fund me to buy
the *extras needed* so detailed information including costing
would be paramount. Can anyone please help me with this before I
apply for funding. I do not want to miss out on any of the extras.
Sometime in the future if I found that I would need anything else
I would have to fund it myself. If I present a good case and it is
under £1000 pounds then I maybe successful.

I think this is also a very good way to encourage us oldies to
become more interested in computers as the Heirarchy almost always
think that we aren't intelligent and are rather childish! I would
love to prove them all wrong.

A few people have seen my small very humerous animated
presentation about Aliens landing at our Sheltered Housing
Establishment. They all thought it was very funny and are willing
to back me when I approach the Housing Association for funding.

Thank you all for the tremendous help that I have been receiving
on this News Group. I have been dabbling now for a couple of
months :). Getting there quicker than I originally anticipated.

One last thought -- don't go too terribly cheap on the projector. You want
it to have enough power to do what you want, and you also want it to be
viable for a few years. And if what you're doing is successful, chances are
you'll end up presenting in larger venues, so you'll want something that
will enable you to accommodate those requests as well. Plan for growth. :)

Thanks for that Echo. I will go for the more expensive as long as I set my
estimates for the Housing Association at just under £1000 I should be able
to purchase a good projector and remote. Your optimism about future years
and different venues made me smile, I had a good chuckle :) I am already in
my mm.. .. seventies so don't really anticipate "doing the rounds". I am
living my life to the full, holidays etc and to tell the truth I don't know
how I ever found the time to go to work. I am also well into Publisher,
making hundreds of cards every year, have been doing this for many years
now, even though the new Publisher 2007 takes some getting used to :)
Looking forward - - learning curves all of the time, no back pedaling ! !

Thank you

I certainly dived in at the deep end. Thank you all. Maybe in a couple of
months if I get the funding I will post back, success or not.

Hey, never say never! In all seriousness, I hope I'm still learning as many
new things when I'm your age, Maureen.

Maureen,
If it isn't too late, I have another recommendation for you: Ask how well
the projector takes bumps. Obviously, it isn't going to take drops from any
height, but you want to make sure that the projector won't loose focus just
because it gets knocked.

Oh - and being able to fix keystoning by hand is a good thing too.

Hi Kathy

First of all when I began to read your message I thought "what are bumps"
then realised ! ! I thought it was another Project term that I hadn't heard
of :) I don't know what keystoning is though - - any help with explanation?
(It maybe on the web site that Geetesh sent me about projector terminology
explanations). I didn't get the chance last night to read through it all. I
have the Link in my "Power Point Tips" folder.

It isn't too late at all, I am still collating a list of things that I will
need before I visit stores for estimates, demos etc. It will then take
quite a long time before I will/will not get the Housing Association to
provide the funding I have a lot of work ahead on that score, pricing all
that I require, forming a committee, constitution etc. I know how to do this
but it is still time consuming.

My list:
1.Lap Top (which I have)
2.Projector (not a cheap one) and sturdy enough to take bumps.
3.Remote Control
4.Interlink Navigator (not sure what this is)
5.Long extension cord.(which I have)
6.Display Screen (half a promise that I may be given one)
7.A shoot demo before puchasing.
Anything else - - even what may appear to be the silliest suggestion at this
stage would be helpful.

Having trawled through different web sites to compare prices etc, on paper I
am up to approx £850 which is still under the the maximum of £1000 that I
shall be requesting from the Association's Treasure Fund :) I know before I
even think about purchasing anything I need the costing estimates of all the
correct gear (or is it called software, or just extras?) Must get
terminology correct.

I know my emails are rambling ones, but I would like to tell you that I now
have my very first quiz template ready. I have saved the quiz template twice
for safety (not on a Master Slide, realised I couldn't handle that yet)
then renaming a subsequent new slide before using. Will need at least eight
slides for each quiz ( I will only work with one of my saved slides)
pasteing extra slides into my presentation for each quiz. Quiz table has
sliding on/off rectangles to cover the Question/Answer/Scores, twenty
coloured rectangles. Eleven rows down (ten for the questions and an extra
row before question one, to incorporate titles) with five columns across,
plus of course a Header at the top of table. The Question page (table) is
hidden at the back, working on "clicks". The table of rectangles are now all
aligned evenly and neatly ( I did get help from my husband to align the
correct height/width/depth/positioning of the rectangles etc) as frustration
took over! I hope this is the first and last time I ask him for help even
though he was kindness itself. I want to do this project on my own, and
relying only on this newsgroup for help if I become unstuck :))) Does this
make sense?

Will need to go to "Google" to find all sorts of questions and answers for
the quiz that would be suitable for very eldy people.

Phew ! ! Thank you all

Maureen, here's a link that has a good example picture to show what
keystoning is:

http://www.presentersonline.com/technology/projector/keystonecorrection.shtml

As for your equipment list, an Interlink Navigator is just a type of remote
control -- a presentation advancer, if you will. I was just saying that I
like mine is all. :) There are tons of remotes/advancers out there; you
don't have to get that one!

All the "extra gear" you've listed would be called hardware.

Good to hear you got your quiz going. You're making progress.
