Hi,

I am trying to connect from my windows 2003 server box to my windows
xp box. I have the same username on both boxes with same password.
When I try to get into the \\winxp\c$ from my 2003 box to my windows
xp box, it pops up with a username and password. The problem is that
the username is grayed out with guest and I cannot change it, I can
only type the password.

How do I change it so that the prompt for xp has a username empty
rather than a guest already in there.

Thanks

Never had that issue here. Have you tried turning off simple file sharing in
XP and applying permissions at the directory level? You'll also need to make
sure that the user defined on the XP box has appropriate permissions to the
shares you create on the local machine. <--- That's the key.

On the XP box, switch off simple file sharing then select properties for the
directory you want to share. Click the permissions button and make sure that
the correct user account has full control. Select change or read permissions
later only once you've got the problem sorted out, assuming you may want
only those permissions.

You should also make sure that the same user id has a correctly specified
entry on the security tab. Setup the user as described above with full
control, then scan the list of permissions on the security tab for that user
id. Everything except special permissions should be selected by default.

Of course, you don't say if you're using XP Pro or XP HE, in which case, if
you have XP HE, you're ****ed.

Is this XP Home or XP Pro? Big difference there.

Windows XP Home uses Simple File Sharing, and Guest, without choice.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled.

On XP Pro, and with SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policies (Control
Panel - Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

Thanks chuck,

your solution for the XP Pro worked. It needed the classic mode.
