Did you previously have a Norton or McAfee antivirus program installed?
Their uninstall programs often fail to remove the parts of them that tend
to cause problems in Windows Mail, so you may need to run a separate
cleanup program afterwards.

You can often make it try to send the mail from the Outbox to the outgoing
mail server sooner by clicking on Tools, then Options, then Send. If there
is
no check mark in the box before Send messages immediately, click on this
box, then Apply. Click on OK.

When you installed AVG, did you use the standard install? If so, you can
make it stop causing problems in Windows Mail by uninstalling it, then doing
a custom install where you tell it to leave out the part that scans email.
