2 PCs Lost Connection - 1 PC Still Connects to Internet

Well I came home from work and turned on my desktop pc to find that it lost
its connection to the internet saying "limited to no connectivity". XP will
not let me repair & renew it. (I do not have a wireless connection.) This is
what I've done so far:

Disconnected the router completely and tried connecting the PC straight to
the cable modem- still nothing. Turned on my second desktop PC and it is
doing the exact same thing. Turned on my laptop and it won't connect thru the
router BUT WILL connect to the web when attached directly to the cable modem
(which is how I'm here right now). My laptop is the only one with working
internet.

Tried changing out all the ethernet cables with my "working" notebook cable
and that didn't work. Uninstalled and reinstalled the ethernet cards- still
nothing. Uninstalled and replaced the ethernet cards with a brand new one -
still nothing. Did the DOS "release and renew" commands. That just gave me
the error "unable to contact your DHCP server". Tried deleting and redoing
the winsock registry entries and tried using the "winsockXPfix" utility-
nothing happened. Turned off ZoneAlarm to see if it was firewall related-
that didn't work either. Have rebooted a gazillion times.

I'm so frustrated! How did this happen? My router's lights blink erratically
when connected to all the computers so I'm guessing it's at fault for the
network problem but doesn't explain why only the laptop can connect directly
to the cable modem and receive the internet connection yet my two desktops
won't connect. What can I do now? Please help :(

thanks!

Linaii,

First of all, swapping the router out for a directly connected computer isn't
always productive. Many broadband modems remember the MAC address of the last
connected device, and if you connect another device (such as swapping your
router for a single computer), they'll not accept the connection. If that
computer is expecting a DHCP setting, it'll continue to get "limited to no
connectivity".

Do any of the computers connect to the router? If no computers connect, it
sounds like the router is gone, or maybe asleep. Try doing a power reset on the
router (of course this will require setting it up again).

With two computers showing the same problem, a malware problem is less likely
but not impossible.

Finally, WinsockXPFix is only one of four LSP / Winsock repairs that you should
maybe try. None of the four is any better than the others.
