2 minutes to find "My Computer"

XP HOME, 1.6GHz PIII

All of a sudden, it is now taking a minimum of 2 minutes (at least) for my
PC to display the contents of "My Computer". If I click on "My Computer"
using Windows Explorer, it searches for at least 2 minutes before it finds
the contents. Once the contents of "My Computer" are found/visible, they open
immediately.

The folder "My Documents" on the other hand opens immediately.

It doesn't matter where/how I try and access "My Computer", ie: start menu,
using windows explorer or an application, it is taking a minimum of 2 minutes
to find/display the contents.

Additionally, when I open an application, eg: WMP, and click on the "look
in:" drop down box, it is taking a minimum of 2 minutes to find/display an
option.

It is as if my PC is doing a search for a folder with the name "My Computer"
instead of instantly knowing where it is.

Any ideas on how to resolve this would be most appreciated.

Do you have any mapped network drives set up?

Hi Ed,

Not that I know of, it's a stand alone PC.

Should mention I ran ad-aware & spybot and virus scan, no problems found.

I should also mention that while trying to resolve a FLASH player problem I
made a change to the registry by checking the box "full permission" to
"user", it was blank before. That's when the problem started. So I changed it
back (unchecked full permission) and it didn't resolve it.

I just waited 5 minutes for "My Computer" to display it's contents, what a
mess.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check to see if you have any USB devices that are plugged in but are not powered
on.

I have 3 USB devices plugged in that aren't powered on and this isn't
something new. I have done this for over a year without a problem.

But to make sure I powered them on and nothing was resolved.

Try restarting your system with all attached devices powered on.

Launch the Device Manager and check for any USB items with an Exclamation noted.

To launch the device manager, click on Start > Run, then type devmgmt.msc, then
click on OK.

Try this:
Start-RUN type in "msconfig"
In the "Services" section find and uncheck "Windows Image Acquisition"
Then close msconfig and choose not to restart.
Right mouse click on MY COMPUTER and choose "manage"
Expand "Services and Applications"
Go to the "Services" section.
Locate Windows Image Acquisition, turn it off, and change it to manual.
Reboot your computer and try expanding MY COMPUTER again.

Richard, THANK YOU! "My Computer" now expands immediately.

I found that KB and tried what it suggested but since it only lists 1/2 of
the steps that you laid out, it didn't work. Thank you very much for giving
me the last 1/2 of the actions required to resolve the issue, I certainly do
appreciate it.

Of note, when I first tried your solution, on re-boot, when I got the
"sysconfig" popup I changed the "startup" to normal which of course activated
WIA again. So now I know that I have to "startup" in "selective" mode EVERY
time I turn on my PC.

Have you any idea why this problem would start seemingly out of the blue?

Once again thank you, I honestly thought I was facing a re-install of the OS.
