2 HDDs - one recognized, one not

(I actually have 4 hard dirves but the problem is on the Primary IDE only.)

I have a home-built rig:
Promise Ultra 133 TX card (with latest BIOS)
2 Maxtor HDDs:
1) 91000D8 (10 GB , 7200 RPM)
2) 6Y120LO (120 GB, 7200 RPM)
80 pin cable.

Goal:
I want the 10GB drive as the Master with the 120 GB drive as its slave.
(Faster boot, less usage of System drive when in Windows, easier
reinstallation of Windows, and cuz I want to make it work this way unless it
is impossible).

Problem:
If 10GB is Master, 120GB is not recognized upon boot.
If 120GB is Master, both are recognized just fine.

Jumper Combos I've Tried:

10 GB as Master & 120 GB as Cable Select = (result) - 10 is seen, 120 is
not seen.

No jumpers on either drive = 10 is seen, 120 is not.

Cable Select on both drives = 10 is seen, 120 is not.

10 as Master & 120 as Slave (no jumper) = 10 is seen, 120 is not.

120 as Master & 10 as slave = Both are recognized (as Master & Slave,
respectively).

Have I missed a combo?

The drives, with 120 is Master and 10 as Slave, are seen in DOS & Windows
and work great.

It's odd to me but am hoping someone has either seen this before or knows
about HDDs and can help me out.

thanks!
Joe

Do you really need that many ? Most systems dont.

Not likely, the 10GB drive will have much
worse performance than the 120GB drive.
less usage of System drive when in Windows,

What ?
easier reinstallation of Windows,

Nope. You can get the same result with a
10GB partition on the front of the 120GB drive.
and cuz I want to make it work
this way unless it is impossible).

You do sometimes see stuff like that with those
older drives, the 10GB I mean. Specially with
those older Quantum drives, what that drive is.

Tho its usually the other way around some
dont like being slaves to some other drives.
Jumper Combos I've Tried:
10 GB as Master & 120 GB as Cable Select

Not surprising.
No jumpers on either drive = 10 is seen, 120 is not.
Cable Select on both drives = 10 is seen, 120 is not.

You sure you actually have a cable select cable ? Thats
necessary as well as jumpering the drives for cable select.
10 as Master & 120 as Slave (no jumper) = 10 is seen, 120 is not.
120 as Master & 10 as slave = Both are
recognized (as Master & Slave, respectively).
Have I missed a combo?

No point in trying every combo.
The drives, with 120 is Master and 10 as Slave,
are seen in DOS & Windows and work great.

Likely its not a proper cable select cable. Try one of those.
