I am running XP on an old machine and a new one but the file and setting
transfer wizard keeps erroring out when I attempt to move files and settings
from old machine to new one. Is there a way to connect 2 machines togather
directly?

Sure. If both computers have a network card, connect them with a
crossover cable. Make sure all firewalls are configured to allow lan
traffic as trusted. The easiest way to handle this is to make identical
user accounts/passwords on each machine. Then share out what you want
and transfer the data across.

If you are just trying to get some data from the old machine to the new
one, you can also take its hard drive out and slave it in the new
machine.
