2.5 HOUR Windows XP Professional Startup

Yes, that is not a typo.....it takes my system 2.5 hours to do a cold boot.
Is there some software that can log the boot with time stamps that can help
me diagnose what the problem is? I suspect that it must be scanning the hard
drives for some program to run and can't find it. I have Panda Virus Scan
and it is up to date, so I don't THINK that it is a virus or adware. I
installed the operating system some time ago, and it booted ok for a while,
but it wasn't long before it started the long boot problem. It was not
gradual, but all of a sudden and I can't identify what may have made it
change. Any help would be appreciated.

Boot into Safe Mode.
Perform a system Restore to a point when the system booted in an appropriate time frame.

Can you boot to safe mode or safe mode with command prompt?

This could indicate a failing hard drive and/or the motherboard.

If you have any important data on there which you havent backed up you
should do so at the earliest opportunity.

Go to the website of your hard drive manufacturer and download their
diagnostics utility - this maybe an iso file to make a bootable CD or a
tool which will create a bootable floppy.

Run the full scan to check the health of the drive.
