2.0 USB Use locks up Windows XP

I have a problem with my PC in that it locks up or freezes when a USB flash
drive (or other mass storage device) is installed. When the computer locks
up nothing works not even Ctrl/alt/del. The only thing to do is to re-boot
the computer. It works fine after a reboot as long as a storage device is
not connected via a USB.

This is a fairly new problem. The USB flash drive, external hard drive,
camera and iPod’s all worked fine previously. The computer is approx 2 years
old and is custom made running Windows XP Prof.

I have tried the following:

Ran McAfee scan check for virus, adware, grayware etc. came up clean
Ran MS Defender, came up clean
Ran a check of the hard drive with Trend Micro
(http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) Microsoft recommended this site. Came up
with a few spyware and cleaned that
Ran a format of the flash drive..problem did not go away.
Tried installing the flash drive into all the other USB ports and the same
thing happened…it locked up
Successfully downloaded pictures from a camera
Hooked up a 500G external hard drive and the computer locked up
Hooked up an iPod and the computer locked up.
Checked to see if the USB’s had drivers by typing “devmgmt.msc†in the
Start/run window. The window that pops up indicates there are 2.0 USB’s
running. Any suggestions on correcting this is appreciated.

Install the chipset installation utility for youre boards chipset,if
intel,locate
the set when one of thier boards came out with the same, the latest doesnt
always work. Also, chk event viewer for errors/warnings for the freeze/lock-up.
Also,open device mgr,usb,locate the usb controller,R.click,update drivers

Ran a check of the hard drive with Trend Micro
Housecall is OK, at a best. Check with the Kaspersky Online Scanner as
it's much better at detecting malware:

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Open Device Manager again. Click View > Show hidden devices
Are there any conflicts showing now ?

If not, then after determining the system is free of malware, boot to
Safe Mode and uninstall *all* listings under 'Universal Serial Bus
controllers' by *right clicking* them and choosing Uninstall.
Restart the system to normal Windows mode and all devices *should* be
redetected and the proper drivers reinstalled.

Thanks both of you for the comments. I will try those suggestions. I did
find some information out there that indicated that SIS 7001 USBs have a
compatibility problem with XP have you heard of anything like that? I'm
still miffed as to why the USBs work for a camera but not for a flash drive
or external hard drive. I would really like to back up my files but without
a USB I'm stuck.

MowGreen, I have to thank you for the suggestion to uninstall in the safe
mode. This fixed the problem!!!!! I have read articles saying that there
are incompatibility issues with SIS USB's and XP so I began thinking this was
a hardware issue. But the USB's did work with a camera and USB mouse so I
knew the hardware was working. Anyway the USBs now work again after I
uninstalled them in the safe mode then rebooted and let Windows find the
hardware and installed drivers. Thank you....I have now backed up my files.

I did have a problem with Kapersky and maybe you can shed some light on
this. I went online and got as far as the prompt that said downloading
active X files and I clicked on the pop up but nothing ever happened after
that. I tried it again and instead of clicking on the pop up to install
acitive x i just let the green bar indicating the download of active x file
run for a while but still nothing happened. Any ideas on that?

You're mowst welcome, JC. Which antivirus software is installed on the
system ? That may be the cause of the failure to install the ActiveX
object needed to do the Kaspersky scan.

When you say 'popup' you mean when a new windows appears asking you if
you want to install the ActiveX controls [software] or when IE shows
that yellow bar at the top ?

I have XP with SP2. I'm Running McAfee via Comcast. I disabled the virus
portion of that and have gone into internet options to enable active x.

The pop up I referred to is the active x promt that appears just after you
accept the agreement. I have administrator rights and have set the security
level to medium which should allow anything to come through.

When the active x promt comes us I click on that and it takes me back to the
Welcome to the Kapersky Online Scanner page....then nothing. If I don't
click on that promt the blue bars keep moving on the first box that says
Initialize Kapersky Online Scanner. Then nothing......
