1u rackmount PSU's

Q

Quartz

I have a 1u rackmount enclosure who's psu is on the fritz...

newegg seems to sell 1u-sized psu's by a brand named "athena". I've
never heard of them before, are they any good? if not, what other places
can get a 1u psu from? (I've tried tigerdirect, they don't seem to have
anything)

I'd really rather not have to shell out $150+ and a couple hours worth
of parts shuffling on a whole new 1u case+psu if I don't have to.

any help appreciated :)

Thank goodness, if Tiger had one it'd probably be crap.
You need to define some parameters, "1U" is only the case
size, not the capacity or amperages, which are more
important in limited size PSU due to a more limited
capacity. What were the ratings on the original and what
are the major components in this system?

Why would you buy a new case? It is not hard to find a 1U
PSU, you just can't look for them at generic "PC" suppliers.
Stick with name-brands, like Delta, Sparkle (FSP), PC Power
& Cooling, etc. We dont' even know if you need 4-pin 12V
connector though so there's no point in suggesting anything
without more info. The generic answer would be that there's
over 1 million hits

yeah, I know they don't always have the best deals, but I don't know
where to look for things this specialized.

I realize this, but I assume that any place that sells 1u-sized psu's as
a main item are going to sell more than one type/brand. I expect to do
some searching once I get there :)

What were the ratings on the original and what
are the major components in this system?

it's a single p3 933 mhz (socket 370), intel mobo, 512 ram, promise sata
card and 4 drives plus 4 management dongles (use floppy connection for
power). 10 10k rpm case fans, plus a 4500 rpm cpu fan.

I don't remember what the original specs were when we got the case,
other than that they were at least sufficient to run the system.
I'm figuring 300 watts* is all I need right now though. (the sata card
does intelligent staggered spinups and all that)

*(I know the difference between sustained and peak, so don't start. :p)

Why would you buy a new case? It is not hard to find a 1U
PSU, you just can't look for them at generic "PC" suppliers.

the problem is, I don't know which non-generic suppliers to go to. all
our rackmounts were purchased as case+psu deals, so I don't know where
to go for just a psu.

Stick with name-brands, like Delta, Sparkle (FSP), PC Power
& Cooling, etc.

I'll sheepishly admit I'm not really aware of which of all the brands
out there are good and which are crap... I don't have the time to
research all the new players.

so I take it that 'athena' is not a name brand? ok.

We dont' even know if you need 4-pin 12V
connector though so there's no point in suggesting anything
without more info.

no, all I need is an older style 20 pin atx type. I don't need eps12v or
any of the newer cords/cable/connectors. (except maybe sata power
connectors).

yes, I can use google too, but that doesn't give me information on which
online companies are reputable or have the best prices. (at least, not
easily and quickly).

I'll make clear that what I'm really looking for is a place that sells
1u psu's as a major item, not recommendations on what psu to get per se.
once I find a reseller who gives me choices, I can do further research
myself as to what brands are reliable and what fits my needs.

Quartz, 1/4/2006, 2:48:17 PM,
hmm.. ok.

regarding the company, what was your criteria for purchasing through
them? (good prices, customer service, etc..). I've never heard of
them before, so...

Just because YOU haven't heard of them doesn't mean they are no good.
The PSUs we received are name brand and work just fine. Our criteria
was they had what we needed. As you have found out, there are not too
many choices around.

Just because YOU haven't heard of them doesn't mean they are no good.

no, no, I didn't mean to imply that they were, just that sometimes
people chose one reseller over another for 'custom' reasons, like:
"their prices aren't too hot, but their warehouse is in the same town so
shipping things 3-day is the same as overnight" or whatever. I just want
to make sure that if something like that is the case, those reasons
apply to me also :)

Our criteria
was they had what we needed.

so "only place we found with the proper selection"? I guess that's the
same boat I'm in.

As you have found out, there are not too
many choices around.

yeah I know... unfortunately...

ehh... I glance there every once in a while, but I think in this case
what I need is too specific for them. I also need more information about
the product than they tend to provide.... what I'm really looking for is
a computer reseller who carries rackmount parts as part of their bread
and butter.

May I suggest you fix your signature separator to allow newsreaders to
strip it properly upon replies? Currently you have four dashes, it
should be (dashdashspaceenter) or (-- enter). Look at my separator as
an example. Thanks.
