Good quality power supplies...

I'm going to be doing some builds soon and have began looking around at
PSU's.

The last time, years ago, I did some builds I bought a number of PSU's made
by Channel Well Technologies.

Does CWT no longer sell, to end consumers, PSU's that are "pure" CWT? I
know that CWT makes PSU's for Antec, but they used to also sell PSU's that
were in their (CWT) name. Google is coming up empty.

I was so pleased with the "pure" CWT PSU's that I vowed that I would stick
with them in future. They were rugged and heavy, had steady voltages,
strong rails, came with spec-sheets showing full tested details, had strong
(albeit a little loud) fans, etc. Basically, everything that a PSU is
supposed to be.

I know CWT makes PSU's for Antec and Antec is regarded highly, but I would
still trust a "pure" CWT PSU over Antec. (Antec probably tells CWT to skimp
on parts so they can save a buck or two.)

What I want is good, strong, "industrial" PSU's that are going to last, have
steady voltages, strong rails, built from quality components, etc. I don't
care what it looks like. All this new stuff out there with paint jobs,
lights, and ninjas doesn't add to the function of what a PSU is supposed to
be.

I see there is there also a new "high end" out there, which does seem to
have quality in mind, but also comes with the paint jobs, lights, and
ninjas -- and rediculous total wattages of 1500 to 2000 watts. (Why?!)

Cheers!

You may want to check www.jonnyguru.com, who has a big list of PSUs,
ranked according to his judgments of their quality (lots of PSU
reviews there). Or try the power supply forums at www.hardocp.com and
www.overclockers.com. Channel Well also makes the XClio brand, and I
think that they're equivalent to the CWT A and B series, which are
TruePowers and SmartPowers, respectively.

I'm no expert, but I don't think that CWT is that good any more,
mostly because of their lousy Fuhjyyu brand capacitors (see the above
links and also www.badcaps.net about this), which aren't helped by the
heat caused by the slow fan speeds. Unfortunately bad caps are also
now being used by Fortron/Sparkle/Hi-Q/PowerQ, at least for their
cheapest models, but they seem to hold up better, maybe because their
fans run faster and keep them cooler. I don't know of any bargain-
priced PSUs that are as good as these, but sometimes you can find a
Thermaltake ToughPower or GamePower (by Fortron) at a very low price,
after rebate, often including a case. Other Thermaltakes are made by
a different, inferior company.

not had one fail and no hardware failures with them.

Look into "enhance" brand. I believe that's the closest thing to industrial
quality that you are going to find at the moment, without spending a LOT
more than you SHOULD. And yes, they do have an industrial line-up, I
believe. -Dave
